The Florida legislature has approved Republican Governor Ron DeSantis’s proposed congressional redistricting map, a move that could significantly alter the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Callais, which limited the use of race in drawing congressional districts and weakened Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Governor DeSantis defended the map by citing demographic imbalances and fairness under the Constitution’s equal protection clause. “District 14 had approximately 100,000 fewer votes than the adjacent District 12. The numbers justify it,” he said. “It’s a matter of fairness.”
The map must also comply with Florida’s Fair Districts Amendment, passed by voters in 2010, which prohibits districts drawn to favor one party. Critics have already signaled plans to challenge the new boundaries in both state and federal courts.
The Supreme Court’s decision in the Louisiana case is expected to have broader implications.
