Chapter 2: The Shattered Mask

"Clara! Evelyn! What on earth happened?!" David shouted, his face turning an absolute, bloodless white as he strode into the living room, his briefcase slipping from his hand and clattering against the floor.

Evelyn didn't hesitate for a single fraction of a second. The exact moment her husband's shadow crossed the threshold, her cold, triumphant smirk vanished, instantly replaced by a masterfully rehearsed mask of pure, breathless panic and devastating sorrow. She threw her hands to her face, her eyes welling with instantaneous, superficial tears as she lunged toward the broken glass, making a dramatic show of trying to reach the older woman.

"David! Oh my god, thank heaven you're home!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice hitting a high-pitched, desperate frequency that radiated a terrifyingly fake innocence. "She fell on her own! I tried to catch her, David, I swear I tried! I was just bringing her her afternoon tea, and she suddenly became disoriented and stumbled straight into the display case! It was so fast, she's so fragile, she just collapsed on her own!"

David dropped to his knees amidst the glass shards, his hands trembling violently as he carefully pulled his weeping, bleeding mother into his arms, checking her pulse and shielding her from the sharp fragments. "Mom... Mom, look at me. Can you breathe? Can you hear me?"

Clara didn't say a word. She lay injured in her son’s embrace, her eyes wide with a quiet, profound exhaustion. But she didn't look at David, and she didn't look at Evelyn. Instead, her eyes were fixed on a specific, narrow gap between the base of a fallen mahogany sofa and the edge of the porcelain tiles.

Resting quietly in that dark shadow was a small, unassuming black rectangular device. It was a high-capacity, military-grade digital voice recorder—a device that Clara’s youngest daughter had slipped into her pocket weeks ago, begging her mother to use it whenever she felt unsafe. Clara had activated it just minutes before Evelyn entered the room, and during the violent struggle, it had slipped from her cardigan pocket, landing perfectly flat on the floor.

Evelyn noticed the direction of Clara’s gaze. Her eyes flicked down to the floorboards, and the exact second she recognized the small black device, a sudden, ice-cold spike of primal panic shattered her untouchable composure. Her breath caught sharply in her throat, her skin turning a sickening, ghostly shade of grey under her expensive makeup.

"What is that...?" David muttered, his eyes following his mother's gaze. He reached out, his long fingers sliding beneath the sofa cushion to retrieve the small black machine.

"David, no! Don't touch that dirty piece of junk, it’s probably just an old toy!" Evelyn screamed, dropping her grief-stricken persona entirely as she frantically lunged forward, her fingers clawing desperately through the air to snatch the recorder from his hand. "We need to call an ambulance for your mother right now! Stop wasting time with garbage on the floor!"

Her explosive, overly aggressive reaction caused David to pause. A cold, heavy weight of sudden suspicion dropped into the pit of his stomach. He looked up at his wife, seeing the raw, unhinged desperation sweating through her makeup—a look he had never seen on her beautiful, polished face before.

David didn't hand her the device. Instead, his thumb pressed down firmly on the central playback button.

A small digital light blinked blue. And then, the pristine, upscale living room was violently filled with the crisp, unmistakable high-fidelity audio of Evelyn’s true, unedited voice.
