Chapter 2: The Video on the Screen
The silence that followed was suffocating. Several of Michael’s family members exchanged deeply uncertain, judgmental looks. The officiant, an elderly pastor who had known Michael since childhood, paused the ceremony, lowering his folder.
Michael’s brow furrowed, a cold dread pooling in his stomach. Chloe’s frantic reaction was wrong. It wasn't the reaction of an innocent bride being harassed; it was the reaction of someone trapped. "What truth?" Michael asked, his voice tighter now.
The young man reached into his charcoal coat pocket and pulled out a smartphone. "Please watch this before you make a decision."
Before he could even extend his arm, Chloe lunged forward. "No!" she screamed, her voice cracking. "Don’t you dare!"
Her sudden explosion of urgency caught everyone’s attention. Michael’s mother gasped from the front row. Michael stared at Chloe, seeing a stranger in her eyes for the first time. He gently but firmly held her back by her waist. "Why don’t you want me to see it, Chloe?"
She couldn't answer. She only sobbed, covering her mouth.
Slowly, Michael reached out and accepted the phone. He pressed play.
The video was shot on a phone but clear. The setting wasn't a grand ballroom; it was a sterile, fluorescent-lit courthouse in a small town in Ohio. In the footage, Chloe stood beside the very same young man, wearing a simple white sundress, holding a bouquet of supermarket daisies. They were exchanging vows. But what made Michael’s heart completely stop was the toddler in the frame—a little boy, no older than two, clutching Chloe’s dress and crying out, "Mommy."

The guests watched in stunned, breathless silence. When the video ended, Michael didn't yell. He didn't smash the phone. Instead, he replayed it, watching the little boy call his fiancée "Mommy" over and over again. The ballroom remained completely still, save for the sound of Chloe’s quiet weeping.
Finally, he lowered the phone. He looked at Chloe, his eyes hollow. "Can you help me understand this?"
