CHAPTER 3

The nursery fell into a silence so dense it felt unreal, like the house itself was holding its breath.
Then the second recording crackled through the speaker again.
A voice that didn’t belong to Valeria.
Male. Calm. Precise.
“We proceed tonight. Once the children are relocated, there will be no traceable custody chain.”
Carmen’s stomach dropped.
Alejandro’s hand tightened on the edge of the crib.
“That’s not her voice,” Mrs. Leticia whispered.
Valeria, still standing near the doorway, slowly turned her head toward the device.
For the first time, fear replaced anger in her expression.
Alejandro stepped closer to the monitor. “Play that again.”
But the recording didn’t repeat.
It continued.
Another line. Another layer.
“There will be resistance from the staff,” the man said. “Especially the nanny.”
Carmen felt the room tilt slightly.
They hadn’t been watching only Valeria.
They had been watching her too.
Alejandro exhaled slowly, as if forcing control over something far larger than anger. “Who is he?”
Valeria swallowed.
For a moment, she looked like she might deny everything again.
But the sound of security radios crackled faintly in the hallway. She realized the moment had passed.
“I didn’t choose him,” she said quickly. “He chose me. I just… followed instructions.”
Carmen stared at her. “Instructions from who?”
Valeria’s lips trembled.
And then she said it.
A name.
Not loudly.
But enough.
Alejandro went still.
That reaction alone told Carmen everything: this wasn’t just betrayal inside the home. It reached outside it—into business, power, something structured and deliberate.
A system.
Security appeared at the doorway.
“Sir?” one of them asked.
Alejandro didn’t look away from Valeria. “Take her.”
Valeria finally broke. “Alejandro, listen to me—if you do this, you don’t understand what you’re triggering—”
But the guards moved in.
Her voice faded down the hall, sharp at first, then distant, then gone.
And only then did the babies cry again—like the house had finally exhaled.
Carmen instinctively stepped toward the cribs, checking each child, touching their small hands, counting breaths like she had done a hundred times before.
Alejandro watched her.
Not the panic.
Not the fear.
The control.
The instinct.
Slowly, he spoke.
“You saved them.”
Carmen didn’t look up. “I was in the right place.”
“That’s not luck,” he replied.
Silence stretched.
Then—
A soft knock at the nursery door.
Not security.
Not staff.
A man in a suit stood there.
Different from the guards.
Official.
His gaze went straight to Alejandro.
“Mr. Fuentes,” he said carefully. “We need to speak about the trust structure immediately. There are movements on the offshore accounts… and your signature authorization has been duplicated.”
Carmen froze.
Alejandro’s face tightened.
Duplicated signatures didn’t happen by accident.
Someone had access.
Someone inside.
And then, from the crib monitor again—
A final audio fragment played, unintentionally triggered by the system reset.
A different voice.
Closer.
Almost… inside the house.
“I told you she would interfere.”
Carmen’s blood ran cold.
Because she recognized it.
Not Valeria.
Not the man.
But someone she had seen every day.
Someone who had been adjusting schedules, checking bottles, approving rooms…
A presence in the background.
Mrs. Leticia slowly turned her head.
Her expression changed first into confusion.
Then into realization.
“No…” she whispered.
Alejandro’s eyes narrowed. “What is it?”
But Carmen already stepped back from the crib.
Because the truth had just shifted again.
May you like
And now, the danger wasn’t outside the nursery anymore.
It was standing inside it.
