CHAPTER 2 — THE SECOND SAFE

The upstairs door creaked open.
A young man stepped into the hallway, rubbing sleep from his eyes.
Tyler.
Vanessa's twenty-three-year-old son.
He froze the moment he saw me standing in my father's office, still wearing my military uniform, Grandma leaning weakly against Rosa in the doorway.
His face drained of color.
"You weren't supposed to be back until next month."
Vanessa spun around.
"Tyler, go back upstairs."
But it was too late.
He had already said the one thing nobody should have known.
I slowly closed my hand around the tiny brass key Grandma had hidden inside her robe.
"So," I said quietly, "you've been keeping track of my deployment schedule."
Nobody answered.
The silence was enough.
Marcus stepped beside me.
"Lieutenant... your father installed another safe six years ago."
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"There is no second safe."
Marcus ignored her.
"He never trusted just one."
Grandma lifted her trembling hand toward the enormous bookshelf covering the east wall.
"Third shelf..."
Her voice was barely audible.
"...behind Lincoln."
I pulled out the heavy biography of Abraham Lincoln.
Behind it was a tiny brass keyhole.
The key Grandma had hidden fit perfectly.
Click.
The entire bookshelf shifted with a low mechanical rumble.
A hidden steel door slowly swung open.
Vanessa screamed.
"No!"
Inside was a smaller vault untouched by anyone.
Unlike the first safe, this one was still locked.
The same brass key opened it.
The shelves inside were perfectly organized.
Three hard drives.
Several sealed envelopes.
A thick leather journal.
And one large package labeled in my father's handwriting.
FOR CLAIRE — OPEN ONLY IF I AM GONE.
My hands shook as I opened it.
The first page was a letter.
Claire,
If you're reading this, then I wasn't allowed to tell you the truth myself.
If Vanessa controls this house, don't believe a single tear she sheds.
She never loved me.
She loved Whitmore Industries.
The room became completely silent.
I kept reading.
Everything she wanted is documented here.
Every forged signature.
Every illegal transfer.
Every attempt to isolate your grandmother.
If anything happens to me, give everything to Detective Samuel Brooks.
Marcus whispered,
"He knew..."
I turned another page.
Attached was a flash drive.
Beside it...
A life insurance policy worth twenty-eight million dollars.
Beneficiary:
Claire Whitmore.
Not Vanessa.
Vanessa stumbled backward.
"Those documents are fake!"
Grandma slowly looked at her.
"No..."
May you like
Her voice was weak but steady.
"...your marriage was."
