Chapter 6: The Truth Beneath the Bandages

The underground room changed everything.

Investigators now believed Ava had spent years confined inside it whenever visitors came to the house.

Forensic specialists uncovered traces of old blood, medical tape, and homemade splints.

Someone had repeatedly treated serious injuries without ever seeking professional care.

Three days later, police located the woman known as Grandma at a remote bus station.

She surrendered quietly.

During questioning, she insisted she had saved Ava.

"I found her abandoned," she claimed.

But the evidence told another story.

Hospital specialists confirmed many of Ava's fractures were consistent with repeated physical abuse.

Burn specialists identified scars caused by deliberate contact with heated objects.

The wrapping inside the boots had not protected her feet.

It had concealed the injuries from teachers, neighbors, and doctors.

Then came the final revelation.

DNA testing identified Ava's biological parents.

They had spent six years searching for the daughter who disappeared from a neighborhood playground at the age of one.

They had never stopped looking.

When they entered the hospital room, neither expected Ava to recognize them.

She didn't.

She watched them nervously from her bed.

Her mother knelt beside her.

"I'm not here to make you remember."

She smiled through tears.

"I'm here so you'll never have to be afraid again."

For a long moment, Ava remained silent.
