Chapter 2 - The Mask Shatters

The words landed like a detonation. “Call the police. Immediately.”

Ethan’s practiced smile didn’t just fade—it shattered. I watched it happen from my hospital bed, the monitors beeping in rhythm with my fractured ribs. The man who had controlled every room he entered for four years suddenly looked like a cornered animal wearing an expensive suit.

“Doctor,” Ethan said, his voice still smooth but with a tremor running beneath it, “I think you’re misunderstanding the situation. My wife is confused. She hit her head—”

“She didn’t fall,” Liam repeated. His voice was ice wrapped around steel.

Ethan’s nostrils flared. For half a second, the mask slipped completely, and I saw him. The real him. The man who had slammed my head into the pantry door. The man who had kicked me while I curled on the floor gasping for air. The man who had whispered, ”You never learned when to keep your mouth shut.”

Then he blinked, and the mask was back.

“Clara.” He turned to me, his eyes softening with practiced concern. “Sweetheart, tell your brother I would never hurt you. Tell him this is all a misunderstanding. You’re disoriented from the fall—”

I couldn’t speak. My throat was too damaged. But I didn’t need to.

Liam stepped between us. “You’re not going to talk to her. You’re not going to get within ten feet of her. And if you say one more word, I’ll personally make sure every doctor in this hospital documents every injury on her body before the police even finish reading you your rights.”

The curtain behind us rustled. Two security guards appeared, their radios crackling.

“Sir,” the taller guard said, “we need you to step outside.”

Ethan’s composure cracked further. His jaw tightened. His hands curled into fists at his sides—the same hands that had left bruises shaped like fingerprints on my wrists.

“You’re making a mistake,” he said, looking at Liam. “I’m a respected businessman. I donate to this hospital. I know people on your board.”

“I don’t care if you own the building,” Liam said. “Get him out.”

The guards moved forward. For a moment, I thought Ethan might actually fight them. His shoulders tensed. His eyes darted to the door, to the window, to me.

Then he smiled.

It was the most terrifying thing I had ever witnessed.

“Fine,” he said softly. “I’ll cooperate. But Clara, sweetheart—” He tilted his head toward me. “When you’re feeling better, we need to talk about our future.”

The guards saw a devoted husband reassuring his injured wife. I heard a death threat.

Liam’s hand shot out, stopping the guard. “Wait.”

The room stilled.

“Search him,” Liam said.

Ethan’s face went white. “You can’t—”

“Search him,” Liam repeated. “Now.”

The guard hesitated, looking between the doctor and the businessman. Then he nodded and stepped forward.

Ethan’s composure shattered when the guard found the phone hidden in his sock.

“You have no right—” Ethan started, but the guard was already holding it up.

The screen was lit. A text message, half-typed: Andrea. Need you to handle the accountant. Same as—

Same as what?

The room went absolutely silent. Even the machines seemed to hold their breath.

May you like

Liam grabbed the phone and read the message aloud. “Andrea. Need you to handle the accountant. Same as—” He looked up, eyes blazing. “Same as who, Ethan? Who else did you have handled?”

Ethan’s silence was louder than any scream.
