Chapter 3 : The Audit of Souls

The arrest was clinical and swift. There were no dramatics, only the rhythmic sound of heavy boots on the polished marble floors and the click of handcuffs. Marcus didn't fight back; he seemed to shrink, physically retreating into himself as the reality of his exposure took hold.

As they led him through the grand foyer, he passed the gallery of portraits—images of himself standing over the city he thought he owned. He looked like a statue of a man, noble and invincible, but the man being led out in the rain was small, frantic, and entirely alone.

Evelyn watched from the top of the stairs, her arms crossed over her chest. She felt no rush of adrenaline, only a profound sense of exhaustion washing away. The staff—those who had been forced to look the other way for years—stood in the hallway. They didn't look at Marcus. They looked at her.

"The house is being put into receivership," Evelyn announced to the room, her voice steady. "You will all be paid your full severance and two months' bonus. The accounting firm in the lobby will handle the details."

She walked into the kitchen, the room where Marcus had once famously berated her for forgetting a detail in his schedule. It looked like a museum of a life she no longer lived. She picked up a single ceramic bowl—a piece of pottery she had made in a pottery class he had mocked her for taking—and dropped it into the trash. It shattered with a satisfying, final sound.

She realized then that she hadn't just destroyed him. She had destroyed the version of herself that needed him to exist to define her worth. She walked to the terrace and looked out at the city lights. They didn't belong to the Thorne Empire anymore. They belonged to the people, the workers, the dreamers, and the victims who were finally getting the truth back.
