Chapter 4 - Asset Demolition

By 8:00 a.m. the following morning, the corporate offices of Vale-Carter Capital were a war zone of frantic activity.

A team of twenty forensic auditors from Carter Protective Services had systematically locked down the entire executive floor. The server rooms were sealed, the physical files were placed in secure crates, and every corporate credit card associated with Adrian and Vanessa had been permanently deactivated.

I sat in my father’s old office, a clean white bandage wrapped around my left jaw. The physical pain was a dull, throbbing ache, but my mind was sharp, focused, and entirely calm.

Evelyn Shaw walked into the office, carrying a fresh cup of coffee and a thin manila folder.

"Vanessa’s penthouse was cleared out at 6:00 a.m. today, Lauren," Evelyn said, sitting in the leather chair opposite me. "She tried to flee to Miami with two suitcases of designer jewelry and eighty thousand dollars in cash she had withdrawn from the company’s petty cash reserve. The Port Authority police intercepted her at JFK."

"Did she talk?" I asked, taking a sip of the warm coffee.

"She gave up Adrian within five minutes of her arrest," Evelyn smiled, a cold, clinical look in her eyes. "She signed a full confession, admitting that Adrian had been using her consulting firm to siphon off the twelve million dollars to purchase a private estate in Costa Rica under a shell company."

"And Celeste?"

"She’s currently sitting in her lawyer’s office, trying to secure a loan to cover her personal credit cards," Evelyn said. "She had no idea that Adrian had leveraged her own home to secure the loans for his Costa Rican development. She’s completely broke, Lauren. The trust has officially evicted her from the estate."

I looked out the large window, watching the yellow cabs crawl through the rain-soaked streets of Manhattan. I felt no triumph. I felt no joy. I only felt a deep, profound sense of relief that the shadow of the last three years had finally been lifted from my family's name.

"What about the board?" I asked.

"The board of directors voted unanimously this morning to reinstate you as the sole chairperson and majority shareholder of Vale-Carter Capital," Evelyn said, handing me the signed corporate resolution. "The temporary voting agreement has been permanently dissolved. The company is yours again, Lauren. Your father’s legacy is safe."

I looked down at the paper, my father’s signature—printed on the original trust deed from twenty years ago—staring back at me. I had reclaimed the ground beneath my feet.

But my phone, sitting on the mahogany desk, suddenly vibrated.

I picked it up. It was a secure, encrypted message from our private security team at the local detention center where Adrian was being held pending his arraignment.

Lauren, we have a problem. Adrian’s defense team just posted his bail using a high-value cashier's check from a private offshore bank in Switzerland. He’s been released.

My body tensed, the coffee cup trembling in my hand.

"Evelyn," I said, my voice dropping into a low, tense whisper. "Adrian is out."

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed, her hand instantly reaching for her phone. "That’s impossible. His bail was set at five million dollars, cash-only, and all his personal and corporate accounts were frozen under the court order."

"He didn't use his money," I said, looking at the screen of my phone. "The check was issued by a shell company called Vanguard Holdings LLC—the same company Vanessa’s consulting firm was doing business with. It’s a shadow syndicate, Evelyn. The twelve million dollars he stole... it wasn't just for a house in Costa Rica. He was laundering money for someone else."
