CHAPTER TWO — TWELVE WEEKS

The morning of the ultrasound, I expected to face the truth by myself. But when I entered the examination room, Diego was there with Paola and his mother.

Apparently, he wanted witnesses.

The doctor, Dr. Evelyn Brooks, glanced at the crowded room.

“Laura, are you comfortable with everyone being present?”

I saw Diego’s folded arms and Paola’s confident expression.

“Yes,” I said. “Let them stay.”

I lay back while Dr. Brooks prepared the ultrasound. The room filled with the hum of the machine.

Then the monitor flickered.

A tiny shape appeared on the screen.

My baby.

For one perfect second, everyone else disappeared. Tears slid into my hair as a rapid heartbeat filled the room.

Diego stared at the screen, but his face remained hard.

“Just tell us how far along she is,” he said.

Dr. Brooks measured carefully, checked the image again, and turned toward us.

“Twelve weeks and three days.”

The silence was immediate.

Diego blinked. “That can’t be right.”

“Your vasectomy was eight weeks ago,” I said.

His arms slowly dropped.

Dr. Brooks remained calm.

“Based on the measurements, conception occurred approximately four weeks before the procedure.”

Paola’s face lost its color.

Diego stepped closer to the monitor.

“But the vasectomy was supposed to make pregnancy impossible.”

“Not immediately,” Dr. Brooks replied. “Patients must use contraception until a semen analysis confirms there are no remaining sperm. Did you complete that analysis?”

Diego said nothing.

I already knew the answer.

Dr. Brooks looked from him to me.

“Even if conception had happened after the procedure, pregnancy two months later would not prove infidelity without follow-up testing. But in this case, the dating is clear. Laura became pregnant before the vasectomy.”

Diego’s mother lowered herself into a chair.

“Oh, my God,” she whispered.

Paola took a step toward the door.

“So that’s it?” I asked her. “You came here expecting to watch me be exposed?”

“I only came to support Diego.”

“No,” Diego said quietly. “You told me Laura had probably been cheating for months.”

Paola crossed her arms.

“I said what you were already thinking.”

For the first time, Diego looked at her with suspicion.

His mother began to cry.

“Laura, I’m so sorry.”

I had imagined this moment every night. I thought being proven innocent would feel like victory.

Instead, it felt like standing in the ruins of my own home.

Diego moved toward me.

“Laura…”

I held up my hand.

“You never even waited for the truth.”

The baby’s heartbeat continued, steady and strong.

I turned back to the monitor and let that sound become the only answer I needed.
