Chapter 3: Echoes of the Past

When they burst into the room, a team of nurses was already surrounding Sophie's bed. The little girl was seizing, her face pale, her eyes rolling back. The monitors were screaming a chaotic rhythm.

"What happened?!" Valerie demanded, instantly stepping into her role as the lead physician.

"She had an unexpected allergic reaction to the pain medication administered an hour ago, Dr. Torres! Her airway is closing!" a nurse shouted.

Eli froze at the door, watching his daughter fight for breath. The memory of losing his first wife to a sudden illness flashed before his eyes, paralyzing him with trauma. He felt like he was losing everything all over over again.

"Get me an intubation kit and 0.3mg of epinephrine, now!" Valerie ordered calmly, though her own heart was hammering against her ribs. Her pregnant belly pressed against the edge of the bed as she leaned over Sophie, expertly manipulating the laryngoscope.

"Valerie..." Eli choked out from the corner, completely helpless.

"Eli, look at me," Valerie commanded, her voice cutting through his panic as she successfully placed the breathing tube. "I have her. I am not going to let anything happen to Sophie. Trust me."

For the next two hours, Valerie didn’t leave Sophie’s side. She monitored every breath, adjusted the medications, and gently stroked the little girl’s forehead until the seizure activity completely ceased and her vitals normalized. Sophie was stable, breathing softly through the tube, out of danger.

As the chaos subsided, the nurses cleared out, leaving Valerie standing by the bedside, wiping sweat from her brow. She winced slightly, placing a hand on her lower back. The stress of the situation was taking a physical toll on her seven-month pregnancy.

Eli walked over slowly, looking at Valerie with a reverence that bordered on worship. He gently placed his hand over hers on the bed rail. This time, she didn't pull away. She was too exhausted.

"You saved her," Eli whispered, his voice trembling. "Again. You are the strongest, most incredible woman I have ever known. And I am the biggest fool for ever letting you walk away."

"I am her doctor, Eli. It's my job," Valerie said softly, her anger temporarily drained by the shared trauma.

"It's more than that," Eli said, stepping closer, his eyes dropping to her round stomach. "Can I... please, Valerie? Just once?"

Valerie hesitated. The wall she had built around her heart was thick, but seeing Eli's genuine terror for his daughter had cracked it. She gave a small, almost imperceptible nod.

Eli’s hand trembled as he reached out and gently placed his palm against the curve of her belly. The moment his skin made contact through her dress, the baby gave a sudden, sharp kick right against his palm.

Eli gasped, a sob escaping his throat. He dropped to his knees right there on the hospital floor, pressing his forehead against her stomach, weeping openly. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, little one. Daddy's here. I'm not going anywhere anymore."

Valerie stood there, tears finally blurring her own vision, her fingers lightly brushing through Eli’s messy hair against her own will. The past was shattering, but beneath the rubble, something new was trying to breathe.
