Chapter 4 - The Demolition of SwiftFreight

The collective, horrified gasp from the three hundred elite guests sounded like a sudden drop in cabin pressure.

"No," Gavin whispered, stumbling back against the podium, knocking his microphone sideways with an ear-splitting screech of feedback. "No... that's impossible! You were an accountant! You were nothing!"

"I was the auditor who built the firewall around your grandfather's debt six years ago, Gavin," I replied, turning toward the massive eighty-foot projection screen behind the stage. "And today, I audit the final bill."

Clara Vance tapped a master console at the side of the stage.

The screen didn't display the celebratory Crestview contract.

It displayed the high-definition footage from the button camera on my jacket: Mason Vance sitting on my living room sofa, holding a black trash bag, laughing as he bragged about the forty-million-dollar forged mezzanine debt and Charlotte’s shell LLCs in Nevada.

"We tied the loans to the marital assets... forty million dollars... adjustments so Gavin looks broke on paper..."

The audio boomed through the ballroom speakers with crystalline, undeniable clarity.

Charlotte let out a shrill, hysterical shriek, dropping her clipboard as she lunged toward the AV tech to pull the cables, but two plainclothes detectives stepped directly into her path, flashing gold badges.

"Mason! Shut it off!" Bridget screamed from the front row, her face contorted in sheer, unbridled panic as reporters frantically pointed telephoto lenses at her husband.

"And for the board members of SwiftFreight," I continued, my voice steady as iron, "here is the audio from our bedroom at 11:14 p.m. on Tuesday."

The room went dead silent.

The sickening sound of the leather belt striking flesh filled the hall. Then Gavin’s voice, raw, arrogant, and vicious: “Five strikes over a car I never even touched... Sign the divorce and get out without a penny...”

Several female executives in the front row audibly gasped, turning away in visceral disgust. Two institutional lenders from Chicago stood up immediately, buttoning their coats and walking out of the ballroom, already barking orders into their phones to cancel SwiftFreight’s credit lines.

"Gavin Pierce," a booming voice echoed from the rear doors.

Detective Marcus of the Hennepin County Criminal Investigation Division strode down the aisle, flanked by four uniformed state troopers and two federal marshals.

"You are under arrest for first-degree felony assault, extortion, bank fraud, and corporate identity theft."

Gavin didn't run. He couldn't. His knees buckled, and he collapsed onto the carpet beside the podium he had built for his coronation, his bespoke suit gathering dust as the troopers forced his arms behind his back. The sharp, mechanical click of the steel handcuffs echoed across the silent room.

"Sabrina! Please!" Gavin sobbed, tears cutting tracks through his makeup as they dragged him down the stage steps past his former investors. "It was Charlotte! She lied to me! We built this together! You can't let them take the company!"

May you like

I stood at the edge of the stage, watching him slide into the dark.

"The company was already liquidated at 9:00 a.m. this morning, Gavin," I said quietly. "Crestview bought the underlying debt notes from your mezzanine lenders for thirty cents on the dollar. SwiftFreight belongs to me now. And you are trespassing on my property."
