Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Eviction

By 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, the glass-and-steel headquarters of Vance & Associates in downtown Chicago was a fortress under siege.

David stood at the marble podium in the center of the executive conference room, shirtless and wearing nothing but floral swimming trunks, holding a glass of champagne as he celebrated a supposed multi-million-dollar development acquisition with his partners. He looked immaculate, his tanned chest glistening under the bright lighting, completely confident that his financial maneuverings had secured his place at the top of the city's elite.

Beside the pool table in the adjacent lounge, his sister Sienna and their mother sat on a white leather sofa, laughing as they reviewed luxury travel brochures for a celebratory trip to Monaco.

The heavy glass doors of the boardroom suite swung open with a violent, echoing crash.

The laughter died instantly. David’s face went entirely white, turning a sickly, translucent gray as I walked into the room, dressed in a sharp pink maternity bodysuit that accentuated my postpartum figure. Beside me walked my mother, Evelyn, her pearls reflecting the sharp morning light, accompanied by two uniformed Chicago police officers and a federal marshal holding a red leather portfolio.

"Clara?" David stammered, his hand shaking so violently the champagne spilled over the marble console. "What... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be in the hospital! This is an unauthorized intrusion into a private corporate session!"

"The corporation is officially dissolved, David," I said, my voice carrying a quiet, lethal power that stopped the breath of everyone in the room.

My mother stepped forward, sliding the first thick white envelope across the glass table. "Effective at 8:00 a.m. today, the federal court has approved a total asset seizure on all properties registered to Vance & Associates and the private LLC in Delaware. Your sister's illegal gambling debts were paid using stolen medical capital, which constitutes an immediate instrument of federal wire fraud."

Sienna fell to her knees on the marble floor beside the sofa, her hands clasped together in a desperate, weeping prayer as she looked up at me (as seen in image_c52525.jpg). "Clara, please! We didn't know! We were desperate! They were going to hurt me!"

"You knew exactly whose life you were trading for your debt, Sienna," I said, not once looking down at her.

David lunged forward, his face contorted in a manic, desperate rage as he tried to grab the documents from the table, but the two police officers stepped between him and the console, pinning his arms behind his back and clicking the heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"David Vance," the federal marshal announced, his voice flat and clinical. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, identity theft, mortgage fraud, and intentional medical endangerment of a dependent."

"Clara, please!" David roared as they dragged him past the edge of the pool toward the waiting elevator, his bare feet slipping on the wet tile. "We can settle this! I'll give the money back! I'll sign the divorce papers! Just call off the marshals!"

I turned my back on him, looking out at the sprawling city skyline through the glass windows, my hand gently pressing against my stomach where the pain had finally turned into peace. The stage they had built on five years of lies had just been completely demolished.
