Chapter 5 - The Sovereign
The morning sun rose over the quiet, suburban street, casting a warm, golden light over the manicured lawns.
A black sedan was parked outside the house. Standing beside it was General Victor Vance, wearing a simple, dark suit, his silver hair cropped close, his eyes reflecting the quiet pride of a father who had raised a survivor.
Elena walked out of the front door, carrying a single, small suitcase. She had left the keys on the kitchen counter, along with the signed divorce papers and the certified bank draft for fifty thousand dollars that Beatrice Miller’s attorneys had delivered at dawn.
She walked down the steps, her heart light, her posture relaxed.
Tom was sitting on the steps of his brother’s truck across the street, his head in his hands, looking completely broken. He didn't look at her as she walked past. He had spent the night watching his family’s bank accounts freeze and their legal advisors panic, and he knew that his life would never be the same.
Elena stopped at the edge of the driveway, looking back at the house.
On the mailbox, the name MILLER had been neatly removed, replaced by her mother's maiden name—VANCE.
She walked to the passenger side of the black sedan, opening the door and sliding into the comfortable leather seat. Her father offered her a quiet, knowing smile as he started the engine.
“How was the marriage, Elena?” he asked, his voice a deep, comforting rumble.
Elena buckled her seatbelt and leaned her head back against the headrest, looking out at the beautiful, open horizon of the road ahead.
“It was short, Dad,” she said, a soft, genuine laugh escaping her lips. “But I think he finally understood the lesson.”
As the car pulled away from the curb, leaving the ruined legacy of the Miller family behind in the dust, Elena looked down at her hand.
