Chapter 2

The Legal Execution

Within forty-eight hours, the hospital room had been transformed into a temporary legal war room. I had been moved to a private, high-security VIP wing, courtesy of the hospital board who were terrified of my father’s wrath. My beautiful baby girl, whom I named Clara after my late grandmother, was finally in my arms. She was tiny, perfect, and breathing solidly on her own. Looking down at her face, the pain in my abdomen faded into a cold, unbreakable resolve. I was no longer the quiet, accommodating wife who swallowed Patricia's insults. I was a mother. And I had a wolf at my back.

My father sat in a leather armchair beside my bed, a sleek silver laptop open on his knees. Beside him stood Arthur Pendelton, the top family law attorney in the state, a man who normally charged thousands an hour but was working this case out of sheer reverence for my father.

"The police report is finalized, Evelyn," Arthur said, handing me a thick packet of documents. "Patricia Dawson was processed at the precinct. Her husband tried to post bail immediately, but your father personally spoke to the presiding judge. Bail was denied due to the severity of the injuries inflicted on a post-operative patient. She is currently sitting in a holding cell at Cook County Jail."

A profound sense of relief washed over me, but the shadow of Mark’s betrayal still hung over my chest. "And Mark?" I asked, my voice steady as I rocked Clara. "Did he really hire an attorney before I even went into labor?"

My father opened a file on his laptop, his eyes darkening. "He did. Three weeks ago, Mark retained a low-rent divorce lawyer specializing in asset protection. He was preparing to file for divorce the moment you gave birth, intending to use his mother's wealth to launch a custody battle and strip you of your parental rights, claiming your medical history made you unstable."

"He wanted a boy," I whispered, a tear escaping my eye, though it was a tear of anger, not sorrow. "He and his mother wanted an heir to their precious family name. When Clara was born, they saw her as a failure."

"Then we will show them what a real failure looks like," my father said, his voice tight and resolute. "Arthur, tell her what we've uncovered."

Arthur smiled, a predatory, clinical grin. "Mark’s law firm relies heavily on corporate contracts tied to the state transit authority—contracts that are reviewed by a federal oversight committee. A committee that your father happens to advise. This morning, an anonymous whistleblower leaked Mark's personal financial records to the internal revenue service. It turns out, Mark has been hiding corporate bonuses in offshore accounts to keep them out of the marital estate prior to filing for divorce."

The scope of the retaliation was breathtaking. They hadn't just caught Mark in a lie; they had unzipped his entire financial existence.

"Furthermore," Arthur continued, "we have subpoenaed the security footage from the hospital waiting room from the night of your delivery. It shows Mark sitting with Andrea—his mother’s preferred choice—while you were in the operating room fighting for your life. They weren't grieving, Evelyn. They were celebrating."

The betrayal cut deep, but the pain was instantly replaced by an icy, absolute fury. "I want it all, Arthur," I said, looking up from my daughter's face. "I want full custody. No visitation for Mark or his mother without supervised court-ordered psychological evaluations. I want the house, the accounts, and I want his legal license revoked for hiding assets."

"Consider it done," Arthur said, shutting his briefcase with a sharp, definitive snap. "The court date is set for tomorrow morning. Due to the high-profile nature of the assault charges against Patricia, the chief judge has fast-tracked the emergency custody and restraining order hearings. Mark thinks he’s walking into a standard family court. He has no idea he’s walking into a firing squad."

My father stood up, walking over to press a gentle kiss to my forehead, his hand resting protectively over Clara’s tiny head. "Sleep well tonight, my beautiful girl," he whispered. "Tomorrow, the Hayes family cleans the slate."
