Chapter 3

Chapter 3 - Miracle Amidst the Ashes

Elena kept banging on the door until she realized they weren't coming back. She turned around. The fire had completely engulfed the main exit. The bedroom was a furnace. The only way out was the window."We have to break that glass," Elena said, her voice tight.
Valeria pointed weakly to a corner of the room. "The oxygen tank..."
Elena followed her gaze. It was a medical oxygen tank Valeria used at night on her doctor's recommendation. The wall of fire was marching directly toward it. Elena paled. If the flames reached that tank, the pressure would trigger a massive explosion.
"We have to get away from it!" Elena grabbed the broken leg of the wooden chair and bashed the cracked window. The glass splintered further, but didn't break.
Valeria tried to step up to help, but a sharp, agonizing pain shot through her abdomen. She clutched her stomach. "No... no, not now."
Another contraction doubled Valeria over. She fell to her knees. A pool of fluid began to spread beneath her dress. Her eyes widened in pure terror. "The baby is coming. Now."
Elena dropped the chair leg. "Oh, God. No."
The smoke was dropping lower, suffocating them. The fire was inches from the oxygen tank. Thinking fast, Elena dragged Valeria into the en-suite bathroom. She slammed the door shut and stuffed wet towels under the crack to block the smoke.
"Listen to me," Elena said, kneeling beside her. "I am getting both of you out of here."
Valeria panted through the agonizing pain. "How?"
Elena looked at the small bathroom window. It was narrow, but it opened onto a side terrace. She grabbed a heavy metal bathroom stool and shattered the window pane. "You first," Elena said.
Valeria shook her head. "I won't fit. Not like this."
Another contraction ripped a scream from Valeria's throat. Elena noticed a metal towel rack anchored to the wall. She ripped it free with a desperate burst of strength and used it to pry and bend the metal frame of the window, widening the gap.
Just then, a sharp, high-pitched whistling sound echoed from the bedroom. The safety valve on the oxygen tank was failing. Time had run out.
Elena helped Valeria onto the window sill, but Valeria stopped halfway, crying out in agony. "I can't! The baby... the baby is crowning!"
Elena gently pulled her back down, spreading clean towels over the tiled floor. "Then he's being born right here."
Valeria looked at her, terrified. "Elena, we're going to die in here."
The older woman took her hand, squeezing it tightly. "Not before this baby takes his first breath."
The heat from the bedroom was warping the bathroom door. Valeria screamed, pushing with everything she had left. Elena guided her through it.
"Push, Valeria! Push!" "I can't... I can't breathe!" "Look at me! One more time!"
Outside the estate, sirens wailed in the distance. A landscaper had spotted smoke and called 911. Daniel and Teresa were trying to slip out through a side gate when the estate’s security team blocked their path.
"Where is Mrs. Valeria?" the head of security demanded. Daniel kept his eyes on the ground. "I don't know."
Suddenly, a deafening explosion rocked the mansion. The oxygen tank had blown, destroying a massive section of the upper master bedroom wall.
"We've got people trapped! Ladders up, now!" the arriving firefighters yelled.
Inside the bathroom, the blast blew the door completely off its hinges. Elena had thrown her body over Valeria to shield her. In the heavy silence that followed, a new sound emerged: a tiny, weak cry.
The baby was alive. Elena quickly wrapped the newborn in a clean towel. "He's breathing, Valeria. He's okay."
Tears streamed down Valeria’s face. "Give him to me." She held her son tightly against her chest.
But the fire was now pouring into the bathroom. Just then, a firefighter’s ladder crashed against the window sill. A first responder reached his arms through the smoke. "Give me the baby!"
Valeria kissed her baby's forehead and passed him through the window. "I've got him!" the firefighter yelled. "I'm coming back for you!"
Elena helped Valeria scramble toward the window. But just as Valeria was about to climb through, a massive, burning support beam collapsed from the ceiling, crashing down between them. Elena was trapped on the other side.
"Elena!" Valeria screamed. "Go!" Elena yelled through the flames. "Your son needs you!"
The firefighters pulled Valeria out of the window just as the remaining roof collapsed inward.
Down on the lawn, paramedics rushed Valeria and her newborn to an ambulance. Daniel and Teresa were being held by police nearby when the sound of the baby's crying cut through the chaos. Daniel's face went completely pale.
Valeria stared at him from the gurney. "He survived."
Within minutes, the police found the master bedroom key in Teresa’s pocket and retrieved security footage showing Daniel locking his wife inside. The handcuffs clicked around both of their wrists.
Just then, the rescue team emerged, carrying Elena on a stretcher. Her face was covered in soot, her eyes closed.
Valeria struggled to sit up. "Is she alive?" A paramedic checked Elena's pulse. After an agonizing pause, he nodded. "Weak, but she's holding on."
Valeria let out a sob of pure relief. Elena had nearly sacrificed her life for them.

Before being forced into a police cruiser, Daniel looked back one last time. Teresa leaned into his ear, whispering coldly, "The baby is still alive. Which means we haven't lost yet."
Valeria caught the look on her mother-in-law's face. She clutched her baby closer to her chest. The fire was finally out, but she knew the real battle had only just begun.
