Chapter 3

Chapter 3: The Ones We Trust Most
The footsteps stopped outside the bridal suite.
No one moved.
Lily tightened her grip around Ethan's hand.
The little girl's small fingers trembled against his palm.
"Daddy..." she whispered. "Are they mad at me?"
Ethan crouched until he was eye level with her.
"No, sweetheart."
"But Grandma said bad people are looking for me."
His heart clenched.
A few hours ago, he hadn't even known Lily existed.
Now every instinct inside him screamed to protect her.
"No matter what happens," Ethan said softly, "you stay close to me, okay?"
Lily nodded.
Olivia wiped tears from her face.
"Ethan, if those men are who I think they are—"
"You said you didn't know anything."
"I didn't," Olivia interrupted. "Not at first."
Margaret Caldwell folded her arms tightly.
"There's no time for this."
Ethan turned toward his mother.
"No."
Margaret looked startled.
"No what?"
"No more secrets."
The hallway outside remained silent.
Too silent.
Daniel peeked through the small crack in the door.
"I don't see anyone."
Victoria Bennett stepped closer.
"Maybe they left."
"No," Margaret said immediately.
Everyone stared at her.
"People like that don't leave."
Ethan noticed something in his mother's expression.
Recognition.
Experience.
"You know more than you're saying."
Margaret avoided his gaze.
"Ethan—"
"You've lied enough."
The harshness in his voice surprised even him.
Margaret closed her eyes briefly.
Then she spoke.
"Five years ago, I received a phone call."
Olivia stiffened.
"It was from a detective."
"What detective?"
"A friend of your father's."
Margaret looked directly at Ethan.
"He warned me that the man Olivia had been involved with was under investigation."
Olivia's face drained of color.
"His name was Adrian."
Ethan frowned.
"You never told me his name."
Olivia swallowed hard.
"I tried to forget him."
Margaret continued.
"Adrian Mercer had connections to dangerous people."
"What kind of dangerous?"
"The kind that makes witnesses disappear."
The room fell silent.
Daniel shifted uncomfortably.
"Okay, this officially sounds like a crime documentary."
Nobody laughed.
Margaret looked toward Lily.
"The detective believed Adrian had hidden something before his death."
"What?" Ethan demanded.
"I don't know."
Olivia shook her head.
"This doesn't make sense."
Margaret turned sharply.
"Doesn't it?"
Olivia froze.
"What do you mean?"
"You never wondered why Adrian suddenly became interested in you?"
The accusation stunned everyone.
"He loved me."
Margaret's expression softened slightly.
"Maybe."
"But he also knew you were vulnerable."
Olivia took a shaky breath.
"He wasn't a monster."
"No," Margaret agreed.
"But the people around him were."
Lily tugged Ethan's sleeve.
"I'm hungry."
The innocence of her voice shattered the tension.
Ethan forced a small smile.
"What would you like?"
"Pancakes."
Daniel blinked.
"Kid's got priorities."
For the first time all day, Lily giggled.
It lasted only a second.
But it reminded Ethan exactly what mattered.
She was just a child.
Whatever secrets surrounded her...
none of this was her fault.
A loud crash echoed downstairs.
Then shouting.
Daniel's smile disappeared.
"That's not good."
The hotel manager burst into the hallway moments later.
"Mr. Caldwell!"
"What happened?"
"There are men demanding access to the guest list."
Olivia went pale.
Margaret whispered a curse under her breath.
Ethan stepped forward.
"Call the police."
"We already did."
"Good."
The manager hesitated.
"They said it could take twenty minutes."
Twenty minutes.
An eternity.
"We need another exit," Ethan said.
Victoria nodded immediately.
"The service elevator."
Daniel looked confused.
"Are we seriously escaping our own wedding?"
Ethan glanced toward Lily.
"Apparently."
Olivia knelt before her daughter.
"Lily."
The little girl looked up.
"We're going to play a game."
Lily tilted her head.
"What kind of game?"
"We're going to be very quiet."
"Like spies?"
Olivia smiled weakly.
"Exactly like spies."
Lily nodded enthusiastically.
"I can do that."
Margaret opened the suite door cautiously.
"The hallway is clear."
Ethan lifted Lily into his arms.
Instinctively, she wrapped her arms around his neck.
"Daddy?"
"Yeah?"
"You smell nice."
Despite everything, Ethan laughed softly.
"So do you."
Lily rested her head against his shoulder.
The gesture felt natural.
Dangerously natural.
As they moved through the empty corridors, Ethan couldn't ignore the growing certainty inside him.
Whether biology confirmed it or not...
he already loved her.
The service elevator doors opened.
Everyone stepped inside.
Daniel pressed the lobby button.
Nothing happened.
He pressed again.
Still nothing.
"Oh, you've got to be kidding me."
Margaret frowned.
"The power?"
The emergency lights flickered.
Olivia clutched Ethan's arm.
"They found us."
"No."
But Ethan wasn't sure.
The elevator suddenly jerked.
Lily whimpered.
"I don't like this game anymore."
Ethan hugged her tighter.
"It's okay."
The doors finally opened onto the underground parking garage.
Darkness stretched across rows of expensive vehicles.
Daniel exhaled.
"We made it."
A voice echoed behind them.
"I wouldn't celebrate just yet."
Everyone froze.
Two men stepped from the shadows.
Tall.
Well-dressed.
Expressionless.
One held a photograph.
Lily's photograph.
The shorter man adjusted his tie.
"We're looking for the little girl."
Ethan moved protectively in front of Lily.
"Who are you?"
The man smiled without warmth.
"Friends."
"Try again."
Margaret stepped forward.
"What do you want?"
The taller man studied Lily carefully.
"To bring her home."
Olivia's face twisted in horror.
"No."
Lily buried her face against Ethan's shoulder.
"Daddy..."
Ethan's pulse thundered.
"You're not taking her."
The shorter man sighed.
"Mr. Caldwell."
Ethan stiffened.
"We know who you are."
"Then you know the answer."
The man's smile disappeared.
"You misunderstand."
He reached into his jacket.
Daniel cursed.
Victoria screamed.
Ethan shifted Lily behind him.
The man slowly withdrew...
a business card.
Everyone stared.
He extended it toward Ethan.
"My employer wishes to speak with you."
Ethan didn't move.
"Who is your employer?"
The man hesitated.
Then answered.
"Adrian Mercer."
Silence.
Olivia's knees nearly gave out.
"That's impossible."
"Adrian is dead."
The taller man exchanged glances with his companion.
"So you've been told."
Ethan felt Lily trembling.
"What does that mean?"
The shorter man straightened.
"It means Adrian Mercer is very much alive."
The world stopped.
Olivia shook her head repeatedly.
"No."
"You attended his funeral."
"So did many others."
Margaret looked horrified.
"He faked his death."
"Protection," the man corrected.
Olivia's breathing became uneven.
"He abandoned us."
The man regarded her calmly.
"He was protecting you."
"By disappearing?"
"By ensuring no one could use Lily against him."
Lily looked up.
"Who's Adrian?"
Nobody answered.
The taller man softened slightly.
"Your father."
Ethan's stomach dropped.
"No."
Lily frowned.
"But Daddy's right here."
Every adult in the garage fell silent.
Ethan's heart shattered.
Biology.
DNA.
The possibility he had clung to.
Gone.
Olivia covered her mouth as tears streamed down her face.
"I don't understand."
The shorter man stepped forward.
"Adrian wants to explain everything."
"No," Ethan said firmly.
"You don't get to show up after five years and make demands."
"You don't have a choice."
Daniel moved beside Ethan.
"Pretty sure he does."
The taller man's expression hardened.
"Our employer has enemies."
"So do we," Daniel muttered.
Lily squeezed Ethan's hand.
"Don't let them take me."
Ethan looked down at her.
Fear filled those blue eyes.
The same eyes he'd begun seeing as his daughter's.
Maybe she wasn't biologically his.
But in every way that mattered...
he couldn't walk away.
He stood taller.
"Lily stays with us."
The shorter man sighed.
"Mr. Caldwell."
"I'm serious."
The man glanced toward Olivia.
"He'll come for her eventually."
Olivia shook violently.
"No."
"You know Adrian."
"No."
"He loved Lily."
"He left us."
"To save you."
Ethan stepped forward.
"If Adrian Mercer wants to talk..."
He pocketed the business card.
"...he can arrange it properly."
The shorter man nodded once.
"We'll be in touch."
Then both men disappeared into the shadows.
Nobody moved for several seconds.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
"What. The actual. Hell."
Margaret leaned against a nearby car.
"He should be dead."
Olivia collapsed into tears.
Lily looked confused.
"Why is Mommy sad?"
Ethan knelt before her.
"Because grown-ups make mistakes."
Lily considered this carefully.
"Like when I colored on the walls?"
Daniel snorted.
"Exactly like that."
Lily smiled.
Then looked at Ethan.
"Are you still my daddy?"
The question stole his breath.
Olivia looked away.
Margaret closed her eyes.
Everyone waited.
Ethan reached out and brushed a curl away from Lily's face.
"You know something?"
"What?"
"Being a daddy isn't just about blood."
Lily blinked.
"It's not?"
"No."
"Then what is it?"
Ethan swallowed hard.
"It's showing up."
"It's protecting people."
"It's loving them even when things get scary."
Lily threw her arms around his neck.
"Then you're my daddy."
Tears burned behind Ethan's eyes.
Because in that moment...
he realized he didn't care what any DNA test revealed.
Family wasn't always created the way people expected.
Sometimes...
family was chosen.
Olivia watched them silently.
Hope flickered across her expression for the first time all day.
But Margaret remained uneasy.
"Ethan."
He looked toward her.
"If Adrian is alive..."
"What?"
"We're all in danger."
The joy of the moment faded.
Ethan tightened his hold on Lily.
The business card rested heavily in his pocket.
Questions remained unanswered.
Why had Adrian disappeared?
Who had been chasing him?
What secret had nearly destroyed all of their lives?
Most importantly...
could Adrian Mercer be trusted?
Lily yawned sleepily.
"Daddy?"
"Yeah?"
"Can we still get pancakes?"
Despite the chaos surrounding them, Ethan smiled.
"Absolutely."
Lily grinned.
"With strawberries?"
"Extra strawberries."
As they walked toward the waiting cars, Ethan glanced back toward the darkness where the mysterious men had vanished.
Somewhere out there...
a man long believed dead was waiting.
A man claiming to be Lily's father.
A man connected to every secret that had shattered Ethan's world.
And Ethan knew one thing with absolute certainty.
He wasn't letting Lily face that man alone.
Even if it meant risking everything.
Because this little girl in the white princess dress...
May you like
had changed his life forever.
And Chapter Four would decide whether this fractured family could survive the truth—or lose each other for good.
