PART 2 — The Camera No One Remembered

PART 2 — The Camera No One Remembered

Harper stared at Meredith for several long seconds before finally speaking.

"It wasn't Preston who was called first."

Meredith frowned.

"Then who?"

"Someone named Sloan Whitmore."

The name hit Meredith harder than the fall itself.

Sloan.

The woman Preston insisted was only a business consultant.

The woman who always seemed to appear whenever Meredith left the room.

The woman wearing jasmine perfume.

The same perfume Meredith had smelled just before hearing that whispered "Oops."

Harper reached into her purse and pulled out Meredith's phone.

"You've been getting messages for months."

Meredith unlocked it with trembling fingers.

Most of the messages were ordinary.

Doctor appointments.

Baby shopping lists.

Pictures of the nursery.

But buried beneath them were deleted notifications restored by Harper.

Unknown Number:

"He'll leave her after the baby is gone."

Another.

"Don't worry. Everything will be ours soon."

Another.

"Tonight?"

Meredith felt sick.

Before she could process anything, the hospital door opened.

Preston rushed inside.

His expensive suit was wrinkled, and his eyes were red.

He crossed the room in seconds.

"Oh my God, Meredith."

He reached for her hand.

She instinctively pulled away.

For the first time since they met, confusion replaced confidence on his face.

"What happened?"

"You tell me."

Silence filled the room.

Then Harper quietly stood.

"I'm getting coffee."

As soon as she left, Meredith looked directly at her husband.

"Why was Sloan called before you?"

His expression froze.

"What?"

"Answer me."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

Before Meredith could respond, another knock interrupted them.

Lucia, the housekeeper, stepped inside.

She looked terrified.

"I need to show you something."

From her apron pocket, she pulled out a tiny memory card.

Meredith blinked.

"What is that?"

Lucia swallowed.

"The old nanny camera."

Meredith remembered it immediately.

Years earlier, Preston's sister had installed hidden nursery cameras when her twins stayed at the mansion.

Everyone assumed they had been removed.

One hadn't.

Lucia lowered her voice.

"It points toward the upstairs hallway."

Meredith's heart stopped.

"It recorded everything."

...

Two hours later, a detective and hospital administrator gathered around a laptop.

The video began.

Meredith appeared walking carefully toward the stairs, one hand supporting her pregnant belly.

Three seconds later Sloan entered the frame.

She looked around.

No witnesses.

She smiled.

Then she walked quickly toward Meredith.

Both hands extended.

One deliberate shove.

Meredith disappeared down the staircase.

Sloan calmly watched her fall.

Then came the whisper captured by the camera microphone.

"Oops."

No one in the room moved.

Even the detective seemed unable to speak.

Finally Preston whispered,

"No..."

His face lost all color.

"I never knew."

The detective paused the video.

"There is more."

Everyone watched as Sloan pulled out her phone.

Her first call lasted twenty-two seconds.

The contact name appeared clearly.

Preston Ashford.

The detective checked the call log.

Preston answered.

Meredith stared at her husband.

"You talked to her."

Preston shook his head desperately.

"I thought she was calling about tomorrow's board meeting. I never imagined—"

He looked at the screen again.

Tears filled his eyes.

"I failed you."

Meredith didn't answer.

She simply turned away.

For the first time since her marriage began, trust had completely disappeared.

...

The next morning Sloan was arrested before boarding a private jet.

Police uncovered months of messages revealing her plan.

She believed Meredith's death would leave Preston devastated and dependent on her.

She had underestimated one forgotten nanny camera.

But another surprise waited.

During the investigation, detectives discovered forged financial documents.

Sloan had secretly stolen millions from Preston's company while manipulating executives and framing employees.

Her perfect life collapsed in a single day.

Meanwhile Meredith's condition suddenly worsened.

Doctors rushed her into emergency surgery.

Outside the operating room, Preston sat alone for six hours.

For the first time in years, money, power, and influence meant nothing.

He could only pray.

At sunrise, the surgeon finally emerged with a smile.

"Congratulations."

"You have a daughter."
