Chapter 5 - All Three Children

Forty-nine years of marriage, two children, a lifetime built together—and hidden behind a pantry wall, another child’s name.
“Claire,” I whispered.
Before June could make a call, her phone rang. It was her assistant. June listened, her face turning pale.
“A woman called asking about the farm sale,” June said after hanging up. “She knew the parcel number for the north field, Daniel’s full name, and the exact wording of the ownership condition.”
“Did she give a name?”
“Claire Vale. She says she’s nearby.”
I looked out the window as a dark sedan slowed down and stopped beside the mailbox. A woman in her late fifties stepped out. The resemblance to the young woman in Daniel's photograph was unmistakable.
The passenger door opened, and a tall, broad-shouldered man carrying a worn leather case joined her. I recognized him immediately—he was the representative who had negotiated the farm sale on behalf of the confidential buyer.
June whispered his name: “Thomas Vale.”
The man who had arranged the three-million-dollar purchase was connected to Claire. He was family.
A knock sounded at the front door.
June looked at me. “Do you want me to send them away?”
I thought of Rachel and Marcus fighting over money that hadn't arrived. I thought of Daniel’s hidden letter, and of the north field—the one parcel he had never allowed us to mortgage, even during our hardest years.
I looked at the brass key in my palm.
“No,” I said. “Let them in.”
June opened the door. The woman from the photograph’s future stood on the threshold, her eyes filling with tears.
“I’m sorry to come without warning,” she said. “But I was told you found Daniel’s letter.”
“Who told you?”
She glanced at Thomas, who opened the worn leather case and removed a sealed document.
“Daniel did,” Claire answered. “Three weeks before he died.”
My hand tightened around the key. “That’s impossible. Daniel died six years ago.”
“I know.”
“Then why wait until now?”
Claire looked past me toward the pantry and the land beyond it. “Because he made me promise not to return until you decided to sell the farm.”

Thomas placed the sealed document on the table. Across the front, in Daniel’s unmistakable handwriting, were six words that changed everything:
FOR MARGARET AND ALL THREE OF MY CHILDREN.
