Chapter 2: The Truth Buried Under Concrete

Over the following weeks, Adrian and I worked together.

Not as husband and wife.

As witnesses.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Financial ledgers.

Bank transfers.

Private emails.

Hidden recordings.

Then I remembered something else.

"There was an accident."

Adrian looked up.

"What accident?"

"The Harbor Point project."

His expression froze.

"That's where my father died."

I nodded.

"It wasn't an accident."

Years earlier, I had overheard Marcus drunkenly boasting to one of his friends.

"They'll blame the engineers."

"No one will ever know we switched the concrete."

At the time I hadn't understood.

Now I did.

The forged inspection reports had hidden dangerously weak foundations.

When one section collapsed, three workers died.

Adrian's father had refused to falsify the final report.

So my father framed him instead.

Adrian sat silently for nearly a minute.

Then he whispered,

"My father told the truth."

"He always did."

"He died believing the world thought he was corrupt."

I placed my hand over his.

"We're going to change that."

Federal investigators reopened the case.

Engineers examined preserved construction samples.

The results shocked everyone.

The concrete had been deliberately diluted.

Millions had been stolen.

Safety reports had been forged.

Bribes reached city officials.

Insurance companies.

Inspectors.

Even bank executives.

The scandal became national news.

Marcus panicked.

He emptied overseas accounts.

Booked a private jet.

And disappeared.

Or so he thought.

Three hours before takeoff, federal agents surrounded the runway.

Marcus never left the ground.
