Chapter 5 - An Unsettled Ledger

The cold wind howling off the lake battered the large glass windows of the Sinclair penthouse. The city below was a grid of bright, blinking lights, silent and peaceful under the dark winter sky.

I sat in a comfortable rocking chair, holding Grace close to my chest as she drifted off to sleep. The room was warm, the fireplace crackling softly, but my mind was sharp, focused, and entirely watchful.

The divorce was finalized, Dominic and Brooke were facing ten years in a federal penitentiary, and Olivia was currently living in a modest, one-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of the city, her name erased from the high-society columns.

But as I looked at the digital file on my screen, a sudden chill settled deep in my stomach.

It was the transfer log for the twelve million dollars Dominic had siphoned from the development fund during his final weeks as CEO. The money hadn't been spent on Brooke’s luxury lifestyle or Olivia’s debts.

It had been routed to an anonymous, offshore shell company based in Zurich called Vanguard Logistics LLC.

And the sole, registered manager of Vanguard Logistics was a man named Viktor Vance—Dominic's estranged older brother, who had vanished from the city fifteen years ago after a bitter dispute over his father's will.

My phone, resting on the table beside my chair, suddenly vibrated with a soft, persistent hum.

The screen displayed no number. No location. Just a single, blinking word: Private.

I pressed the answer button, holding the phone to my ear without saying a word, the sound of the wind outside filling the silence of the room.

For a long, agonizing moment, there was only the sound of deep, rhythmic breathing on the other end of the line.

Then, a voice spoke—low, gravelly, and entirely unfamiliar.

"You played a beautiful game, Clara," the voice whispered, the tone carrying a quiet, lethal amusement. "You dismantled Dominic's stage, and you took the company. But those twelve million dollars didn't belong to your family's trust. They were an outstanding payment for a commercial port acquisition in Marseille. And Vanguard always collects its debts."

The line went dead with a sharp, digital click.

I slowly lowered the phone, looking out at the dark, vast expanse of the lake. The water was still and quiet, but in the distance, a sleek, dark black sedan was slowly idling near the entrance gates of my building.

I reached down, my hand gently pressing against my daughter’s back as she slept, my eyes locking onto the dark horizon.

The Vance dynasty was gone.

But as the red taillights of the sedan flared in the dark street below, I knew that the true war for my daughter's legacy was only just beginning.
