Chapter 35 - The Standoff

The heavy, suffocating tension in the foggy courtyard was palpable. The red dots of the laser sights danced menacingly across Mateo’s chest, but he did not flinch.
"You are a coward, Julian," Vanessa suddenly spoke up, her voice ringing out clearly in the damp night air. She stepped out from behind Mateo’s protective stance, refusing to cower.
Julian’s eyes narrowed dangerously. "Careful, little girl. You are testing my limited patience."
"You hide behind armed men and forged paperwork," Vanessa continued fiercely, staring the monster dead in the eye. "You are exactly like Richard. A weak, pathetic man who has to steal and terrorize women because you are incapable of building anything real yourself. You stole my life thirty-four years ago, but you will not steal my family today."
Julian’s face twisted into an ugly, hateful sneer. The elegant, sophisticated mask slipped entirely, revealing the rotting, malignant core beneath.
"You are nothing but an immigrant's mistake that we repurposed for our own benefit!" Julian spat viciously, raising his silver cane and pointing it directly at Vanessa’s face. "Kill the father! Grab the box from the girls!"
The security contractors tightened their grips on their weapons, preparing to fire.
But before a single trigger could be pulled, the absolute darkness of the street was violently shattered by the blinding, strobing flash of dozens of red and blue emergency lights. The deafening, ear-piercing wail of multiple police sirens erupted simultaneously from every direction, completely surrounding the abandoned building.
Julian froze in sheer panic, whirling around to look at the street.
"Drop your weapons immediately! This is the Federal Bureau of Investigation! Drop your weapons and get on the ground!" a booming voice commanded through a heavy megaphone.

Mateo reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his phone, holding it up. The screen displayed an active, open phone call.
"You think I walk into an ambush blindly?" Mateo said to Julian, a cold, victorious smile touching his lips. "Mr. Pierce has been on the line with the FBI for the last twenty minutes. They heard every single threat you just made, Julian."
