Chapter 28 - The Legal Strike
Mateo was a man of his word. Within four hours, a team of five elite, ruthless corporate litigators from his international firm arrived at the Carter House. They essentially took over the dining room, transforming it into a high-tech legal command center.
Mr. Pierce collaborated seamlessly with Mateo’s sharks. They filed immediate, aggressive counter-injunctions against Julian’s lien, tying the county court in massive procedural knots that legally halted any immediate eviction proceedings.
But Julian Vance was not a man who surrendered easily. Realizing he could no longer simply steamroll us with a fake piece of paper, he escalated his tactics to a terrifying new level.
On Wednesday morning, our clinic’s primary operating bank accounts were abruptly, completely frozen.
I sat at my desk, staring at the flashing red error message on my computer screen. "The bank just locked us out," I announced, panic beginning to rise in my chest. "All of the donation funds, the operational budget, the emergency grants for our domestic abuse victims... it's all frozen."
Mr. Pierce made a frantic phone call to the bank manager. When he hung up, his expression was grim.
"Julian used his connections with a corrupt federal magistrate," Mr. Pierce explained, his jaw tight with anger. "He filed a sealed affidavit claiming the clinic’s funds are directly tied to the money-laundering investigation surrounding Richard Vale. The magistrate ordered a total freeze pending an audit. It’s a completely bogus claim, but it could take months to untangle."
Vanessa slammed her hand against the desk. "He’s trying to starve us out! If we can't pay the security guards, the staff, or support our clients, the clinic collapses by next week!"
Mateo stepped into the room, his presence immediately calming the panic. "I will personally cover all operational expenses for the clinic indefinitely. Money is no longer your weakness."
"Thank you, Mateo," I said, feeling a surge of gratitude. "But we can't just play defense forever. We have to prove Julian’s 1984 lien is a forgery. If we prove the document is fake, the judge will throw out the injunction and unfreeze our accounts immediately."

"To prove it's a forgery," Mr. Pierce said, "we need the original, un-altered partnership agreement between Richard and Julian. And there is only one person on earth who knows exactly where that document is hidden."
I looked at Vanessa. We both knew exactly who we had to ask.
