Chapter 14 – The Alliance of the Torn

The mention of Henry’s name brought a wave of cold reality washing over the room.

"Henry?" I stood up, my hands clenched into fists. "Henry knew about you?"

"Henry knew everything from the very beginning," Maya said, her grey eyes flashing with anger. "He was the one who helped Albert set up the offshore accounts for the Elaine Foundation in 1996. He kept it as blackmail material for twenty-four years. He came here before the federal authorities locked him up. He offered me a choice."

"What kind of choice, Maya?" Oliver asked, stepping forward, his legal pad already out.

"He told me that if I signed a proxy agreement giving his shell company, Vanguard Holdings, the management rights to the Elaine Foundation, he would expose Albert’s secret to the New York press," Maya explained, her jaw tightening. "He wanted to use my existence to trigger a morality clause in the original Montgomery Trust. If he did that, your entire block of shares would be invalidated, Catherine. The company would dissolve, the asset distribution would reset, and Henry would buy up the pieces for pennies on the dollar during the liquidation."

"And what did you tell him?" I asked, looking directly into the eyes of my husband's secret daughter.

"I told him to go to hell," Maya said without hesitation. "I am a textile designer, Catherine. I have a master's degree from Rhode Island. I care about the craft. I care about what my mother built with Albert before he became a corporate monster. I won't let Henry Bennett use my mother’s ghost to line his pockets."

I looked around the room—at the sketches, at Eleanor, at this young woman who possessed the same fierce independence that had once drawn me to Albert. My sorrow, my sense of betrayal, suddenly burned away, leaving behind something much more dangerous: a maternal, protective rage. Henry had tried to destroy my life, he had corrupted my son, and now he was trying to consume this girl.

"Oliver," I said, my voice steady and cold. "What happens if Henry’s legal team brings Maya’s existence to the probate court during the criminal trial next week?"

"If they prove Albert concealed an heir to avoid estate distribution taxes, the federal government can invalidate the entire trust structure," Oliver said grimly. "They could freeze your assets again, Catherine. The townhouse, the academy, everything. It would all go into a federal receivership."

"Then we don't give them the chance," I said, turning to Maya. "Henry thinks you're an asset he can liquidate. He thinks I'm a broken widow he can push around. Maya, do you know how to read a corporate balance sheet?"

A small, sharp smile appeared on Maya's face. "I ran the entire procurement department for New England Linens for three years, Catherine. I know how to spot a lie in a ledger."

"Good," I said, reaching out my hand to her. "Then pack your bags. You’re moving to Queens. Let's show Henry Bennett what happens when the women Albert left behind decide to stitch the truth together."
