PART 1: She was seven months pregnant and alone. Until he walked through that door.

PART 1: The Laugh at the Top of the Stairs

Jason kicked Sarah so hard the baby clothes flew into the air.

Tiny socks.

White onesies.

A yellow blanket she had folded the night before.

They scattered above the staircase like pieces of a life she had been trying to protect.

Sarah was seven months pregnant, one hand on the wooden railing, the other wrapped around a box of baby things she had been told to “get out of the house.”

Her brother stood behind her.

Jason’s mouth curled with disgust.

“Move, you pathetic burden!”

Then his foot slammed into the lower right side of her back.

His hand shoved her shoulder.

Sarah lost the railing.

The box burst from her arms.

Her body hit the first step, then the next, then the next.

The entire house filled with the terrible sound of her falling.

At the top of the staircase, her father laughed.

Not shocked.

Not scared.

Laughed.

Like his pregnant daughter tumbling down the stairs was a joke he had been waiting to hear.

Sarah hit the bottom floor hard.

Pain exploded through her body.

She curled around her stomach, gasping, one hand shaking against the wooden floor.

“My baby…” she breathed. “Daniel…”

The front door flew open.

Daniel rushed inside.

He saw Sarah on the floor.

The scattered baby clothes.

Jason standing on the stairs.

Sarah’s father still laughing in the hallway above.

Daniel’s face changed so fast it frightened even Jason.

He dropped to his knees beside his wife.

“Sarah. Sarah, look at me.”

She tried.

Her eyes were wet, unfocused, terrified.

“My baby,” she whispered again.

Daniel placed one hand gently behind her head and the other over her stomach.

“Don’t move. I’ve got you.”

Then Sarah’s father spoke from above.

“She’s fine. Stop the drama.”

Daniel froze.

Slowly, he turned his head.

On the floor near the last step, Sarah’s phone lay face up.

The screen was glowing.

Recording.

Still recording.

And through the tiny speaker, her father’s laughter could still be heard.

Daniel reached for the phone.

Jason’s smile vanished.

Sarah’s father stopped laughing.

Daniel stood slowly, placing himself between Sarah and the staircase.

His jaw locked.

His eyes burned.

He pointed up at Jason.

“You kicked my pregnant wife.”

Jason took half a step back.

Daniel raised the phone.

The recording timer was still running.

“This is all on record.”

For the first time in his life, Sarah’s father looked afraid.

Because Daniel had not just found proof of what happened.

He had found the sound of a family finally exposing itself.
