Chapter 6 - Echoes in the Mirror

Six months later.

The storm had finally passed. Or so it seemed.

Teresa was rotting in a maximum-security state prison, convicted of multiple counts of attempted premeditated murder. The mansion had been sold, and the dark memories of the glass elevator were buried under layers of court documents.

Valeria sat on the porch of a quiet, sunlit beach house overlooking the ocean. The gentle sound of crashing waves replaced the terrifying roar of rushing water.

In her arms, she cradled baby Leo, who was sleeping peacefully. Daniel walked out onto the deck, placing two warm cups of tea on the table before wrapping his arms around his wife and son from behind.

"He looks just like you when he sleeps," Daniel whispered softly, kissing the top of Valeria's head.

Valeria smiled, leaning back against his chest. For the first time in a year, she felt safe. The legal battles were over, the estate was secured in a trust for Leo, and Teresa would never see the light of day again.

"I'll go check on lunch," Daniel said gently, pulling back. "Rosa said she's almost done."

"Okay, my love," Valeria replied.

As Daniel walked back inside, Valeria’s phone buzzed on the wooden table. It was an unmarked, private number.

Usually, she ignored unknown calls, but something in her chest tightened—a familiar, cold sensation that made her breath hitch.

She picked up the phone and swiped answer.

"Hello?"

Silence on the other end. Only the faint, rhythmic sound of static.

Then, a low, mechanical hum began to play through the speaker.

It was a sound Valeria knew all too well.

The distinct, high-pitched hum of a hydraulic elevator motor.

Valeria’s blood ran cold. "Who is this?"

A woman's voice came through the line. It wasn't Teresa's voice. It was younger, sharper, and chillingly familiar.

"You really thought Teresa was the one calling the shots, didn't you, Valeria?" the voice whispered with a soft chuckle. "She was just the distraction. Check your husband's coat pocket."

CLICK.

The line went dead.

Valeria sat frozen on the porch. The peaceful sound of the ocean suddenly felt miles away. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she looked toward the house. Through the glass doors, she saw Daniel standing in the hallway, his back turned to her, hanging up his suit jacket.

Trembling, holding Leo tightly against her chest, Valeria stood up and walked silently into the house.

While Daniel stepped into the kitchen to speak with Rosa, Valeria reached out with a shaking hand and slipped her fingers into the inner pocket of Daniel’s suit jacket.

Her fingertips brushed against a cold piece of metal.

She pulled it out.

It was a keycard. An encrypted, high-security access card to the mansion's private hydraulic control system.

And attached to it was a small, laminated photo—taken six months ago, from inside the control room, showing the exact moment the elevator began to fill with water.

The angle of the photo wasn't taken from where Teresa was standing.

It was taken from behind her.

Valeria turned the photo over. Written on the back in fresh, dark ink was a single sentence:

"Some accidents take a little longer to finish."

Just then, Daniel walked back into the hallway, holding two plates. He stopped, looking at Valeria.

He noticed the photo in her hand.

The warm, loving smile on Daniel's face slowly vanished, replaced by an unreadable, dead-eyed stare.

"Valeria..." Daniel said softly, taking a step toward her. "What are you doing?"

Valeria took a step back toward the door, clutching her baby close, her eyes wide with horror as she looked at the man she loved.

The wind outside slammed the porch door shut.

And in the silence of the room, neither of them said another word.
