Chapter 5 - An Unwritten Ledger

The morning sun rose over the rolling green hills of my family's private estate in Lake Geneva, painting the sky in warm shades of amber, gold, and dusty pink. The air was clean, smelling of fresh pine trees, damp earth, and the sweet lake breeze.

I stood on the wide cedar-wood veranda of the cottage, holding a warm cup of herbal tea. My ribs had fully healed, and the constant, anxious tension that had occupied my shoulders for three years was entirely gone, replaced by a quiet, unshakeable peace.

Down in the garden, the old rosebushes my father had planted were blooming with fresh, brilliant crimson petals, their thorns sharp and protective in the morning dew.

My phone, resting on the wooden table beside my rocking chair, suddenly vibrated with a soft, persistent hum.

I picked it up, expecting to see a routine project update from Martin Wells.

Instead, the screen displayed a secure, private text message from an unlisted number with an offshore Swiss country code. My fingers tensed as I unlocked the screen, my eyes scanning the single, chilling line of text:

“Lauren, you played a beautiful game with Adrian in that cathedral. But you forgot that the twelve million dollars he siphoned into Vanessa's accounts didn't belong to the Carter trust. It was an outstanding debt Adrian owed to the Zurich Maritime Syndicate. And we don't care about your federal indictments. We are coming to collect the remaining balance. We'll see you soon, witness.”

The line went dead, and the screen flickered into static.

I slowly lowered the phone, looking out at the beautiful, quiet waters of the lake. The valley was silent, the sun was bright, and the birds were singing, but as the shadow of a sleek, dark black SUV slowly appeared on the gravel road leading to my gates, I realized that the ledger of my family's survival was not yet closed.

It was an open map, and the battle for my legacy was only just beginning.
