Chapter 4 - The Demolition of a Thief

At 2:00 p.m. the following afternoon, the corporate headquarters of Vance Enterprises was a beehive of frantic activity.

Derek stood in the center of the executive boardroom, surrounded by his remaining legal team and several senior project managers. He was sweating through his expensive tailored suit, his hands shaking as he pointed at a projection screen showing the company’s empty cash reserve accounts.

"What do you mean the payroll accounts are frozen?" Derek screamed at his chief financial officer. "We have three municipal concrete pours scheduled for tomorrow morning! If we don't pay the union workers, the entire downtown project shuts down!"

"The order came directly from the state supreme court, Mr. Mercer," the CFO said, his face pale. "It's a complete, systemic asset freeze. Personal accounts, corporate accounts, the offshore holdings in Belize... everything is locked tight under a pending grand jury investigation for corporate embezzlement and forgery."

"This is Evelyn's doing!" Marlene hissed from the corner of the room, her designer handbag shaking in her hand. "I told you we should have had her committed months ago, Derek! You were too soft on her!"

"Shut up, Mother!" Derek roared, slamming his fist onto the glass conference table. "She's a crazy woman! She doesn't have the authority to do this!"

"Actually, Derek," a calm, clear voice echoed from the doorway. "She has all the authority in the world."

The room fell into a dead, suffocating silence.

Every head turned toward the double glass doors of the boardroom. I walked in, dressed in a sharp, navy blue business suit that had belonged to my father’s executive wardrobe. My hair was pulled back into a tight, professional bun. My left eye was still covered by a dark, angry bruise, and my split lip was swollen, but my posture was straight as a steel pillar.

Beside me stood Miriam Vale, two state prosecutors, and four state troopers armed with federal arrest warrants.

Derek took a step back, his eyes darting from my bruised face to the state troopers behind me. "Evelyn... what are you doing here? You're not well. You need to go back to the clinic—"

"The only people going to a facility today, Derek, are you and your mother," I said, my voice quiet but carrying a lethal, echoing weight through the room.

Miriam stepped forward, placing a thick leather binder on the conference table.

"As of 1:00 p.m. today, the forged corporate resolution document granting Derek Mercer voting control of Vance Enterprises has been legally declared null and void by the state supreme court," Miriam announced to the room. "Evelyn Vance remains the sole, legal owner and majority shareholder of this corporation. And her first act as owner is the immediate termination of Derek Mercer and Marlene Mercer from all corporate positions."

"You can't do this!" Marlene shrieked, rushing toward me, her manicured nails clawing at the air. "We built this company while you were lying in your bed crying like a pathetic child!"

Before she could reach me, two state troopers stepped in her path, grabbing her arms and forcing them behind her back. The cold, metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the room.

"Marlene Mercer, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand larceny, corporate fraud, and accessory to domestic assault," a trooper read from a card.

Derek looked around the room, realizing with a sickening finality that his friends in the local police department couldn't save him from the state-level warrants. He looked at me, his eyes wide with a desperate, pathetic pleading.

"Evelyn, please," he whimpered, taking a step toward me. "We can talk about this. We're a family. Your father loved me like a son—"

"My father knew you were a thief the moment you tried to change the supplier invoices," I said, my voice steady as iron. "He just didn't live long enough to prove it. But I did."

I nodded to the remaining two troopers. They moved in quickly, pinning Derek against the glass conference table—the same table where he had signed the forged documents—and clicking the handcuffs around his wrists.

"Derek Mercer, you are under arrest for first-degree domestic assault, corporate embezzlement, forgery, and grand larceny," the trooper said.

As they dragged them down the long glass hallway of the corporate headquarters, the employees they had bullied and threatened for two years stood up from their desks, watching in silent, triumphant satisfaction.

I walked to the large floor-to-ceiling window of the boardroom, looking out over the city skyline my father had helped build. The black eye and the split lip still ached, but the cold, suffocating weight that had crushed my chest for two years was finally, completely gone.
