Chapter 1

Chapter 1: The Slap That Changed Everything
"What did you do to my daughter?!"
My voice echoed through the apartment.
Carol didn't even flinch.
"She deserved it," she snapped. "The greedy little thing stole Jackson's sausage. Children need discipline."
I rushed to Zoey and lifted her into my arms. She was shaking uncontrollably, tiny tears streaming down her face.
"Mommy..." she whispered.
The sight of her blood-stained shirt made my hands tremble with rage.
"She's two years old!" I shouted. "You hit a two-year-old hard enough to make her bleed!"
Carol rolled her eyes.
"Stop being dramatic. In my day, children were beaten all the time."
Jackson sat silently on the couch, clutching the half-eaten sausage. His guilty expression told me everything.
I grabbed my phone.
"What are you doing?" Carol demanded.
"I'm taking Zoey to the emergency room."
"And making a police report."
For the first time, Carol's face lost its confidence.
At the hospital, doctors confirmed that Zoey had suffered a fractured nasal bone and severe bruising.
The doctor looked horrified when he heard what happened.
"A grown adult did this?"
I nodded.
Before leaving, I took photographs of every injury.
Every bruise.
Every drop of blood.
Every mark.
Because deep down, I knew this wasn't just about one slap.
It was about years of cruelty.
Years of favoritism.
Years of being treated like an outsider in my own home.
That night, I called Thomas.
When he answered, I didn't cry.
I simply sent him the photos.
Then I said six words:
"Your mother hurt our daughter."
The line went silent.
For a very long time.

Then Thomas said something I never expected.
"I'm coming home right now."
