Chapter 3 - The Audit of the Vance Estate

By 9:00 a.m. the following morning, the private maternity recovery room at St. Jude’s was warm, sunlit, and entirely secure.

The fetal monitor was still humming quietly beside my bed, the rhythmic, steady thump of my daughter’s heartbeat now strong and regular. Dr. Rachel Carter had managed to halt the premature labor, but she had placed me on strict, unyielding bed rest for the remaining three weeks of my term.

Arthur Hale sat in the armchair beside my bed, a thin manila folder resting on his knees. His white hair was neatly combed, and he had replaced his ruined suit with a clean, dark grey sweater.

"The local sheriff's department tried to file the incident as an accidental fall due to third-trimester loss of balance, Sarah," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register. "Eleanor’s personal attorney spent the night at the precinct, claiming Mrs. Hargrove and the maids witnessed you tripping over your own long hem."

"They lied," I said, my voice raspy but steady as iron.

"Of course they lied," Arthur nodded, a cold smile touching his lips. "But they forgot that I upgraded the mansion’s internal intercom system last winter. The microphones in the grand landing were active, Sarah. I’ve already transferred the raw audio file of Eleanor saying, 'You and that baby are finished,' straight to the State Attorney General's regional server."

I opened my laptop, my fingers flying across the keyboard as I logged into the secure network of Vance Holding Group—the entity Eleanor believed she controlled with absolute authority.

"She wanted to protect the family name, Arthur," I said, turning the screen toward her. "But look at the corporate tax returns from the last three years. Eleanor hasn't just been managing Jack’s estate; she’s been systematically siphoning funds from the Vance employee retirement trust to fund her personal real estate acquisitions in Florida."

The spreadsheet filled the screen, a clear, undeniable flowchart of grand larceny.

Eleanor had created a series of dummy vendor invoices for "historical mansion preservation" and "estate security consulting," paying those invoices using the corporate pension accounts, and then transferring the cash directly into an offshore account in the Bahamas registered under her maiden name.

In total, she had stolen nearly four.two million dollars, leaving the family logistics company on the verge of absolute insolvency while she lived like a queen in her white stone mansion.

She had wanted me out of the house because she knew that as Jack’s legal widow, I was entitled to a mandatory seat on the corporate auditing board. She knew that the moment my signature was on the registration books, I would have the legal power to pull the transaction histories and expose the entire structure of her fraud.

"The probate court is convening a special session on Monday morning to finalize Jack’s estate distribution," Arthur said, looking at the documents. "Eleanor has prepared a fraudulent medical affidavit, signed by a corrupt family physician, claiming you are mentally incompetent due to postpartum psychosis."

"She’s trying to build a wall of paper around me," I whispered, my hand gently stroking my stomach, feeling my daughter move beneath my ribs.

"Then let's bring the hammer down," Arthur said, standing up, his frame straight and powerful. "I’ve already coordinated with Martin Wells at the state department. The federal fraud investigators are going to be sitting in the front row of that probate court."
