Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Staff Wing

By 2:00 a.m., the underground garage beneath the main mansion smelled of motor oil, cold concrete, and raw panic.
Leo Rossi was strapped to a heavy steel chair bolted to the floor, his face bathed in the glare of a single hanging work light. His split lip was bleeding onto his white collared shirt, and his hands were bound behind his back with tactical zip-ties. Marcus, my head of field operations, stood beside him, holding Rossi’s decrypted burner phone in a clear evidence pouch.
"I didn't have a choice, Adrian," Rossi croaked, his voice cracking as I stepped into the light, my hands resting in the pockets of my charcoal wool overcoat. "Kane has my sister in Detroit. He told me if I didn't slip the vial into Claire's drink tonight, he'd send her back in pieces."
"You traded a mother and a child in my home to save your own blood, Leo," I said, my voice quiet as falling snow. "In my world, that is a fatal calculation."
"You don't know who she is!" Rossi screamed, lunging against the zip-ties until the plastic bit into his skin. "You think she's just a maid? Look at the phone, Adrian! Look at the files Kane sent me!"
Marcus stepped forward, unlocking the encrypted screen and handing the device to me.
I scrolled through the documents, my jaw tightening until the muscle clicked.
Claire Bennett wasn't a widow from upstate. Her real name was Claire Sterling Vance. She was the sole surviving daughter of Arthur Vance—the maritime magnate who had built the Great Lakes shipping corridors forty years ago before his empire was carved up by offshore syndicates.
Four years ago, Victor Kane had orchestrated Arthur Vance's sudden "heart failure," forged the probate transfers, and seized control of the Vance freight lines. But Arthur had anticipated the betrayal. Before his death, he had transferred the master digital bearer shares of the entire shipping fleet—worth over three hundred million dollars—into a blind trust registered under his infant granddaughter’s name: Lily Bennett Vance.
Claire had spent three years on the run, changing identities, sleeping in shelters, and cleaning houses to keep her daughter off Kane’s radar.
"She came to my estate on purpose," I said, staring at the glowing screen.
"She knew you were the only man on the eastern seaboard Kane wouldn't dare strike openly," Rossi spat, blood flecking his chin. "She used you as a shield, Adrian! And now Kane's private extraction team is at Pier 44, waiting for me to bring the girl out the back gate."
I lowered the phone and looked at Marcus.
"Keep Rossi secured in the sub-level," I instructed calmly. "Michael has Claire stabilized in my private suite upstairs with two armed guards outside the door. Lily is asleep."
"And Kane, boss?" Marcus asked, his hand resting on the grip of his sidearm.

I looked toward the steel ramp leading up to the driveway, where the snow was beginning to blanket the grounds.
"Kane wants an extraction," I said, a cold, predatory smile touching my lips. "Let's make sure he gets the reception he paid for."
