Chapter 4

CHAPTER 4: EVIDENCE MADE FLESH
The scream tore through the limestone walls of the mansion, sharp and terrified enough to freeze the blood in Christopher’s veins. He didn't think. He didn't breathe. He threw his weight against the heavy oak doors of the library, bursting through them and sprinting across the grand dining hall.
Guests turned in shock as the suit-clad billionaire pushed past them, knocking over a crystal champagne tower that shattered spectacularly against the marble floor. Christopher didn't care. His eyes were locked on the glass doors leading to the courtyard.
He slammed them open so hard the glass rattled in its iron frames.
The scene outside was a nightmare unfolding under the blinding glare of the afternoon sun. Emma was in the deep end of the swimming pool. Her tiny hands were frantically clawing at the air, splashing desperately as her head dipped below the glittering, suffocating blue water. Her lungs were fighting for oxygen, her screams reduced to choked, watery gasps.
Juliette stood precisely at the edge of the deep end. Her cream satin dress was immaculate, completely dry. She had her hands raised near her face in a carefully manufactured pose of horror, but her feet were firmly planted. She was watching the child sink.
"Oh my god! Somebody help!" Juliette shrieked, her voice loud enough for the gathering crowd to hear. "She slipped! I tried to catch her, but she—"
Christopher didn't let her finish. He launched himself off the stone ledge, running past her and diving straight into the water.
The cold shock of the pool hit his body, but the adrenaline burning in his veins obliterated the chill. He broke the surface in a single, violent stroke, locking his arms around Emma’s sinking, throngs of wet fabric. He pulled her head above the water, roaring for breath as he hauled her tiny, shivering frame against his chest.
Swimming hard to the shallow end, Christopher scrambled up the stone steps and collapsed onto the hot tile, cradling his daughter. Emma coughed violently, vomiting pool water onto the stone, her small body shaking so hard her teeth chattered. Her wet hair was pasted to her pale cheeks, and her fingers clutched at his wet suit jacket with a terrifying, vice-like grip.
"I’ve got you, Emma. I’ve got you," Christopher breathed, his voice breaking as he rocked her. "Daddy’s here. You’re safe."
A suffocating silence dropped over the courtyard. The music had stopped. Dozens of wealthy socialites, politicians, and business partners stood in a massive, silent semicircle around the pool. The housekeepers, gardeners, and caterers stood right behind them. The atmosphere shifted instantly—the shock in the air curdled into heavy, suffocating judgment.
Christopher stood up slowly, lifting Emma into his arms. Water dripped heavily from his clothes, pooling on the expensive stone. His eyes, completely devoid of their usual warmth, locked onto Juliette.
"Security will escort you out of this house," Christopher said. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried a dangerous, vibrating quietness that cut through the open air like a blade. "You will pack your things, and you will never step foot on a piece of Renshaw property again."
Juliette’s pristine facade cracked, her eyes darting to the crowd of onlookers who were already whispering. "No... No, Christopher, please! You’re in shock! Listen to me, I can explain! She was playing near the edge, her shoe lost grip—I was reaching for her when you ran out!"
"Daddy," Emma sobbed into his neck, her voice small but piercingly clear in the dead silence. Every single eye in the courtyard locked onto the little girl. "She... she pushed me. She told me Grandma said I shouldn't be here. She said Grandma wanted me gone."
The name detonated under the scene like a bomb. Not Juliette’s name. Estelle’s.
Juliette went visibly, horrifically pale. The color drained from her face until she looked like a ghost wrapped in cream satin. "She’s confused! Christopher, she’s traumatized, she's lying! Your mother loves her! Your mother is upstairs recovering from a cardiac episode, she hasn't left her room all morning—she has nothing to do with this!"
"Is that so?"
The calm, unyielding voice of Mrs. Yvette Sloan cut through Juliette’s frantic panicking.
The old housekeeper stepped out from the glass doors, holding the small black audio recorder high enough for the entire crowd of guests to see. Her voice was steady, backed by thirty years of moral stubbornness. "Sir, there is more on this tape than the child even knows. Listen to the rest."
Christopher stepped forward, his boots squelching with water, and took the device from Yvette’s hand. He didn't lower it. He turned the volume to maximum and hit play right in front of the crowd.
Juliette’s recorded voice played first, hissed and venomous, scheming about the inheritance. But then, a second voice followed it. It was thin, raspy with age, yet dripping with absolute, terrifying authority. It was Estelle Renshaw.

“Then make sure the little problem never reaches the lawyers. Christopher is weak. He takes after his father. Do what needs to be done, Juliette. Secure the estate.”
The recording stopped. The courtyard seemed to tilt under the oppressive California heat. The pristine reputation of the Renshaw family legacy had just been stripped naked and exposed in the afternoon sun.
