Part 4: The Shadow War

The eviction from the hospital room was only the first battle in a war that lasted for the next five months.

Ethan and Vanessa did not disappear quietly. Stripped of their wealth, their status, and their social standing, they retreated into a dark corner of the corporate underworld. Vanessa’s father, desperate to salvage what was left of his family’s legacy, used his remaining political connections to hire Richard Sterling—no relation to us, but a notoriously ruthless corporate defense attorney known as "The Wolf of Wall Street."

Their strategy was brutal and public. They launched a massive, coordinated smear campaign through the tabloids, attempting to paint me as an unstable, vindictive pregnant woman who was using her father's government clearance to execute a personal vendetta against an innocent husband.

I sat in a private secure suite at the Sterling Corporate Headquarters in Washington, D.C., looking at a magazine headline that read: The Dictator's Daughter: How Lena Vance Destroyed Two Legitimate Businesses Over Marital Jealousy.

"They are trying to control the narrative before the custody hearing next month, Lena," my father's senior security analyst, Marcus, said, adjusting a digital display on the wall. "Richard Sterling is planning to argue that you are psychologically unfit for sole custody due to 'extreme emotional volatility' during your pregnancy."

I looked down at my reflection in the polished glass desk. My pregnancy was in its final weeks now, my belly large and heavy under my comfortable white sweater. The stress of the public eye was immense, but inside my soul, there was no volatility. There was only a cold, unyielding calculation.

"Let them talk, Marcus," I said quietly, taking a sip of warm chamomile tea. "The public court doesn't decide federal fraud cases. What is the status of the financial audit on Ethan's startup?"

"We found exactly what we were looking for," Marcus replied, clicking his remote to reveal a series of encrypted bank ledgers. "Ethan wasn't just trying to merge with Cross Enterprises. He had been skimming money from the employee healthcare fund for the last two years to fund Vanessa’s offshore accounts. Vanessa wasn't just his mistress; she was his financial co-conspirator. They were planning to flee to a non-extradition country the moment the merger went through."

My breath hitched slightly as the full scope of their betrayal became clear. Ethan hadn't just been unfaithful; he had been planning to abandon me and our child after stripping me of my mother's estate.

"They thought they were playing a game of public relations," I said, my voice dropping into that quiet, terrifying register I had inherited from my father. "Let's remind them that in a court of law, facts do not care about headlines. Prepare the full deposition files, Marcus. We are going to let them walk all the way to the witness stand before we pull the rug out from under them."
