THE SIGNATURE THAT WASN'T HERS

CHAPTER 6: THE SIGNATURE THAT WASN'T HERS

Brooke signed Megan's name in the nursery.
That was the first thing she admitted.
Not at the dining room table, where Nora waited with a legal pad and the officer stood near the hall like a man wishing his shift had stayed ordinary. Not in the kitchen, where the lavender candle still burned with Brooke's fingerprints on the glass.
In the nursery.
She insisted on going there because, she said, she needed Megan to see where it happened.
Megan almost refused.
Then she remembered her mother's letter.
Ask what he needs you too frightened to notice.
The nursery had pale green walls and a white crib under the window. Ryan had chosen the mobile: little wooden stars and moons turning gently in the air conditioning. Megan had folded tiny clothes into labeled drawers last Sunday while Brooke sat on the floor, eating grapes and saying the baby would come out better dressed than both of them.
Now Brooke stood near the rocking chair in Ryan's wrinkled shirt and pointed to the small writing desk.
"There."
Megan looked at the desk.
A stack of thank-you notes sat beside a silver pen. Baby shower gifts still waited to be acknowledged. A quilt from Nora. A hand-knit sweater from Dr. Sane. A pink elephant from Brooke, who had cried when Megan opened it.
Megan wanted to throw it out the window.
She did not.
Objects did not commit betrayal.
People used them for cover.
Brooke sat in the rocking chair and wrapped both arms around herself.
"Ryan said you had already approved the forms but your hand hurt from swelling. He said I should help."
Megan stared at her.
"My hand hurt?"
"You'd mentioned your rings were tight."
"So you forged my name because my rings were tight?"
Brooke closed her eyes.
"I know."
"No. You don't get to say I know until I believe you do."
Nora stood in the doorway, silent.
She had advised Megan not to question Brooke without counsel present for both sides. Megan had said she was not questioning. She was listening.
There was a legal difference.
There was also a sister difference.
Brooke looked at the crib.
"He said you were going to keep her from me."
Megan's jaw tightened.
"My daughter?"
"Our family."
"Say what you mean."
Brooke's eyes filled.
"You. You always had something I could only visit."
The sentence sat there.
Old.
Molded by years.
Megan let it breathe because if she crushed it too soon, it would come back later wearing another outfit.
"Mom loved you," Megan said.
Brooke laughed once, ugly and wet.
"Mom needed you. That's different."
Megan looked away.
The baby shifted under her ribs.
Their mother, Elaine, had been sick the last four years of her life. Megan had managed the appointments, medications, trust paperwork, nurses, insurance appeals. Brooke had brought flowers, made playlists, cried in the hallway, and left when things smelled medical.
Megan had called that weakness.
Maybe it was.
Maybe it was also a younger daughter never being asked to hold weight until the weight became resentment.
Brooke continued.
"Ryan said you liked being the one everyone needed. He said after the baby, there would be no room for me."
"And sleeping with him solved that?"
Brooke covered her face.
"No."
"Then why?"
Her hands dropped.
"Because he looked at me first."
There it was.
Not love.
Selection.
The saddest drug in a family where one sister had spent her life feeling second.
Megan's anger did not leave.
It changed temperature.
Ryan had known where to pour the poison.
Brooke had drunk it willingly.
Both things could be true.
Nora stepped in.
"Brooke, you said Ryan recorded you. Where?"
Brooke pointed toward the top shelf of the closet.
Megan frowned.
The baby monitor camera sat there, angled toward the crib.
"He said it was for nursery security," Brooke said.
Nora asked, "Does it record audio?"
Brooke nodded.
Megan walked to the closet and reached up. The camera was small, white, expensive, and connected to an account Ryan had insisted on managing because Megan was "too pregnant to fight with apps."
Nora photographed it before unplugging.
"We need the cloud login."
Brooke whispered, "Ryan has it."
Megan looked at the rocking chair.
Ryan had filmed her nursery.
Her sister forging her name.
Maybe Megan folding clothes.
Maybe private phone calls with Dr. Sane.
Maybe nights she came in alone and sat in the dark with one hand on her stomach, whispering fears she had not told anyone because women over thirty learned how quickly fear could be mislabeled.
Nora's phone buzzed.
She read the screen.
"Ryan's attorney just filed notice of intent to seek emergency access to marital property and protection of unborn child assets."
Megan laughed.
She could not help it.
The sound came out wrong in the nursery.
"Unborn child assets?"
Nora's face was hard.
"Your mother's trust creates a child subtrust upon birth. Ryan may be claiming protective interest as father."
Megan looked at Brooke.
"Did you know that?"
Brooke shook her head so hard her curls fell across her face.
"No. He said it was about staying close to the baby. I swear."
"You swear now?"
Brooke flinched.
Megan wanted to keep hitting with words until Brooke was as bruised inside as Megan felt.
Then the baby kicked.
Low.
Hard.
Megan pressed her palm there and breathed.
Cruelty was a room she could enter easily tonight.
She refused to decorate it for Ryan.
Nora held up the camera.
"If Ryan has recordings, he may use edited clips. We need full access before morning."
"How?"
Nora looked around the nursery.
"Your mother's trust includes a digital forensics retainer. I can call them."
Megan stared.
"My mother had a digital forensics retainer?"
Nora's mouth curved slightly.
"Your mother believed love was lovely and passwords were war."
Megan almost cried then.
Not from sorrow.
From being protected by a dead woman more competently than she had been loved by the living.
Brooke stood.
"I know Ryan's old passwords."
Megan looked at her.
"Why?"
Shame moved across Brooke's face.
"Because he gave them to me for the apps. Food delivery. camera system. His old email. He said you never remembered anything right lately."
Megan closed her eyes.
Another little cut.
Another day she had been described as failing while she trusted both of them to help.
Nora held out a notepad.
"Write them down."
Brooke took the pen.
Her hand shook.
She wrote six passwords.
The fifth was ELAINE2020.
Megan stared at it.
Her mother's name.
Ryan had used her mother's name to lock Megan out of proof.
That was when forgiveness left the room entirely.
Nora photographed the page and sent it.
The reply from the forensic team came six minutes later.
They had access.
Not only to the nursery camera.
To the master bedroom camera.
To the pool terrace camera.
To a hidden archive labeled M PLAN.
Nora looked up from her phone.
"Mrs. Mercer."
Megan knew from her tone that the night was not finished taking skin.
"What?"
Nora turned the phone toward her.
A folder list appeared.
M_PLAN_FINAL
BROOKE_COMPLIANCE
LOWELL_STATEMENT_DRAFT
AFTER_BIRTH_TRANSFER
Megan's mouth went dry.
Brooke whispered, "After birth?"
Nora opened the last folder.
Inside was a video thumbnail.
Ryan in the nursery, alone, holding the baby monitor camera before installing it.
The timestamp was three weeks ago.
Nora pressed play.
Ryan's face filled the screen.
He was smiling.
Not at the camera.
At someone offscreen.
"Once she's delivered," he said, "Megan becomes optional."
Brooke made a sound like something breaking.
May you like
Megan stood perfectly still.
The camera in the nursery had not been installed to protect the baby; it had been installed to prove Megan could be removed after the birth.
