CHAPTER 9 — The Moment She Doesn’t Flinch

The confrontation happened in the hallway outside the east wing.

The former supervisor.

Now reassigned staff.

Now under Roman’s watch.

He saw Nora before she saw him fully.

And smiled.

That small smile froze something in her chest.

Instinct rose.

Shoulders tightened.

Hands moved—

Then stopped.

Halfway.

She froze her own reaction.

For the first time.

Roman, watching from a distance, saw it happen.

And didn’t interrupt.

The man approached.

“Nora,” he said casually.

Her name sounded different in his mouth.

He stepped closer.

Too close.

Nora’s breathing tightened.

But she didn’t raise her arms.

She didn’t fold.

She stood still.

And said:

“Don’t come closer.”

The man blinked.

Then laughed softly.

“You’ve gotten bold.”

Before he could step again—

Roman’s voice cut through the hall.

Cold.

Final.

“One more step,” he said, “and you leave this house permanently.”

Silence.

The man stopped.

Slowly turned.

Saw Roman.

And understood immediately.

He was no longer in control of anything here.

He left within the hour.

No argument.

No explanation.

Just removal.

Nora stood frozen after it was over.

Then slowly realized something terrifying.

May you like

She hadn’t flinched.

Not once.
