Chapter 5 - The Open Ledger

The afternoon sun rose high over the Silver Lake hills, but inside my home, the silence felt heavy, watchful, and incomplete.
I stood in the center of the living room, the boxes of Daniel’s remaining belongings packed and stacked by the front door. The house was clean, the marble floors spotless, but the air felt thin, like a sheet of ice over a deep, dark lake.
Miriam Vale walked into the room, her face pale, her phone held tightly in her hand.
"Claire," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "We just received the title search results from the county recorder's office."
"What is it, Miriam?" I asked, a sudden dread clenching my stomach.
"The refinancing documents Daniel signed three years ago..." Miriam whispered, handing me a printed deed. "He didn't just sign for a home-equity line of credit, Claire. The notary he used was a close personal associate of Vanessa’s father. They slipped in a secondary land-transfer deed. The physical ground beneath your house—the actual soil of the estate—was transferred to a holding company called Vanguard Land Trust."
I stared at the paper, my father’s name printed at the top of the original deed, but the bottom bore Daniel’s signature, witnessed by Vanessa.
The house belonged to my trust. But the ground beneath it belonged to them.
Suddenly, a heavy, authoritative knock rattled the front door of the mansion.
I walked to the door, my hand trembling as I turned the brass lock. I opened it.
Daniel stood on the porch, wearing a sharp, fresh suit—one I had never seen before. Beside him stood a tall, elegant older man with silver hair and a cold, calculating gaze. In his hand, the older man held a red leather portfolio.
"Good afternoon, Claire," Daniel said, his voice carrying a calm, triumphant confidence that made my blood run cold. "I believe you have some of my things. And we have some of yours."
The silver-haired man stepped forward, offering a thin, polite smile. "My name is Viktor Vance, Mrs. Rowan. I am the managing director of Vanguard Land Trust. And we are here to discuss your rent."

The ocean breeze from the open door rustled the papers in my hand, and for the first time in my life, I realized that the ledger of my father's legacy was not closed.
It was an open map, and the battle for the ground beneath my feet was only just beginning.
