Chapter 1

The steaming amber puddle of chamomile tea was still soaking through the delicate lace of my maternity dress when I finally tore open the heavy, wax-sealed manila envelope I had hidden in my purse for seven agonizing months. My sister-in-law, Chloe, stood over me with a cold smirk, casually holding the empty porcelain teapot, while my mother-in-law, Eleanor, barked orders for me to scrub the hardwood floor before the liquid stained her precious wood.
For nearly a year, I had endured their relentless cruelty, acting as an unpaid maid in their sprawling suburban home while my husband, Mark, was deployed overseas, completely blind to the living nightmare his family forced upon his pregnant wife. They made me scrub toilets, carry heavy groceries up three flights of stairs, and eat alone in the dark kitchen after serving them multi-course dinners, constantly reminding me that a girl from a working-class background should feel lucky to even breathe their air.
I swallowed every insult and wiped away every tear for the sake of the baby growing inside me, but when Chloe deliberately scalded my skin and laughed at my pain, something inside me finally snapped.
With shaking, burned fingers, I pulled out the document from the mysterious envelope that a private investigator had hand-delivered to me months ago—a document containing a truth so dark and explosive it would utterly destroy the prestigious family name Eleanor held so dear. As I looked up from the floor, meeting Eleanor's arrogant glare, I didn't cry; instead, I let out a low laugh that made the smirk vanish from Chloe’s face as I prepared to read the first line aloud.
