Chapter 6

Chapter 6: The Burner Phone Protocol

The smell inside the back of the garbage truck was absolutely horrific—a potent, gag-inducing cocktail of rotting vegetables, stale beer, and industrial waste. But to David, Sarah, and Dr. Mitchell, it smelled like absolute salvation.
The massive truck roared down the city streets, every bump and pothole sending violent tremors through the metal chassis. They huddled together in the darkest corner, clinging to the rusted steel grating to keep from being thrown around.
"Who is that?!" Sarah yelled over the deafening roar of the engine, holding her nose with one hand and clutching her stomach with the other. "Who just saved us in a garbage truck?!"
"Elias!" David yelled back, coughing as the truck hit a sharp turn. "He's... well, he used to be the lead cybersecurity architect at Vanguard! He was my mentor!"
"Used to be?" Dr. Mitchell asked, wiping grime from her forehead. "Why did he leave?"
"He didn't leave, he was fired!" David explained, his voice frantic. "A year ago, he started getting paranoid. He said Sterling was building unauthorized, illegal biometric weapons. He tried to blow the whistle, but Vanguard discredited him. They framed him for corporate embezzlement. Everyone thought he went crazy and fled the country!"
"Well, thank God for crazy people," Dr. Mitchell muttered, checking Sarah's pulse by pressing two fingers against her wrist. "Sarah, how is the pain? Is it still burning?"
Sarah nodded, her face pale beneath the dirt. "It comes in waves. It feels like a cell phone vibrating, but... deeper. Hotter. Doctor, what is it going to do to the twins?"
Before Dr. Mitchell could answer, the truck slammed on its brakes, throwing them all forward. The engine idled loudly. A small, square metal grate slid open between the cab and the holding area. Elias's grease-smudged face appeared in the opening.
"I lost them for now," Elias barked, his eyes darting frantically. "Sterling's goons will be pinging the city's traffic cameras to find this truck. We have exactly five minutes before they lock onto our trajectory. I'm pulling into an abandoned warehouse district on the south side. We ditch the truck and take the burner car I stashed."
"Elias!" David crawled toward the grate. "How did you know we were at the clinic? How did you know Sterling was coming for us?"
Elias let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "I didn't know you were at the clinic, kid. I've been tracking her." He pointed a grimy finger at Sarah. "Or rather, I've been tracking the Class-4 military-grade data core sitting in her uterus."
Sarah gasped, her hands flying to her stomach. "You knew about this? You knew they put this in me?"
"I designed the encryption protocols for it," Elias said, his voice dropping, the bravado fading into genuine guilt. "I didn't know they were going to put it in a civilian. I thought it was for deep-cover operatives. When I found out Sterling was using unknowing corporate spouses as biological mules... that's when I tried to burn the company down. He caught me before I could."
"Why did you track us today?" David demanded, anger flaring again. "If you knew, why didn't you warn us months ago?"
"Because the drive was dormant!" Elias yelled back. "It emits zero signal while it's in deep-sleep mode to avoid detection. I couldn't find her! But an hour ago, the drive suddenly activated. It sent a massive telemetry burst to Vanguard's servers. It was screaming its location. I intercepted the ping and hauled ass to the coordinates. What the hell did you do to wake it up?"
David and Sarah looked at Dr. Mitchell.
The doctor swallowed hard. "I... I did an ultrasound. I used high-frequency sound waves directly over the target area. I must have triggered a localized activation sequence."
"Great," Elias groaned, hitting the steering wheel. "You rang the doorbell. Listen to me. The drive isn't just a hard drive. It's a bio-reactive intelligence. Now that it's awake, it's going to try to establish a permanent neural link with the host to finalize the data integration. We need to get it out of her. Today."

"We can't!" Dr. Mitchell yelled back through the grate. "She's pregnant with twins! Any invasive surgery outside of a sterile, state-of-the-art operating room will kill the babies, and likely the mother!"
Elias stared through the grate, his eyes cold and terrified. "If we don't get it out of her in the next six hours, Doctor... the drive is going to overwrite her central nervous system. Sarah won't be Sarah anymore. She'll just be a walking flash drive."
