Chapter 1

They said I was overreacting while I lay bleeding on my parents' living room floor. My sister had just thrown scalding tea across my body and driven her boot into my pregnant stomach, yet somehow my family decided I was the problem. By the time my husband finally got me to the hospital, they had already turned him into the villain—and the police were walking into my room with a warrant that would change everything.

My name is Emily Parker, and every time I crossed the threshold of my childhood home, I became the one expected to apologize, stay quiet, and carry everyone else's blame.

But that afternoon was supposed to be different.

I was twelve weeks pregnant.

Nathan squeezed my hand as we walked inside, both of us smiling because we believed we were about to share the happiest news of our lives. Before we said a word, I quietly opened the recording app on my phone. I wanted to capture my parents' excitement, my sister's surprise, maybe even a few happy tears.

Looking back, that tiny decision would become the only reason anyone would ever know the truth.

""We're having a baby,"" Nathan announced with a grin.

My mother's smile froze.

My father barely reacted.

Only my younger sister Megan moved.

She slowly stood from the couch with a steaming mug of peppermint tea in her hand, staring straight at my stomach. There wasn't a trace of happiness on her face. Only resentment.

""Are you sure you're even pregnant?"" she asked with a bitter laugh. ""Or is this just another stunt to make everything about you?""

The words hit almost as hard as what came next.

Nathan stepped between us. ""Megan... back off.""

Instead of listening, she walked closer.

Her boot caught the edge of the rug—or at least that's what she wanted everyone to believe.

She lurched forward with an exaggerated gasp, dumping the entire mug of boiling tea across my lap.

I screamed as the burning liquid soaked through my clothes.

""Oh my God!"" Megan cried dramatically. ""Nathan startled me! It was an accident!""

But as I struggled to peel the scorching fabric away from my skin, her performance disappeared.

She leaned close enough that only I could hear her.

""If I really wanted to,"" she whispered, ""I could make all of this disappear.""

Before I could even react, she drove her heavy combat boot straight into my lower abdomen.

Pain exploded through every inch of my body.

I staggered backward, completely losing my balance.

The back of my head slammed into the sharp corner of my parents' oak coffee table with a sickening crack.

Everything went black.

When I opened my eyes again, I was barely conscious.

Blood soaked my hair.

My stomach felt like it was being ripped apart from the inside.

I tried to move, but my body wouldn't cooperate.

Nathan was shouting.

""Give me my phone!""

My father planted himself in front of the hallway like a wall.

""Calm down,"" he snapped. ""Nobody's calling an ambulance over a stupid accident.""

My mother rushed to Megan's side, cradling her as if she were the victim.

""Emily is being dramatic,"" she insisted. ""If paramedics show up, the police will get involved. Are you really going to destroy your sister's future?""

Destroy her future?

I was the one lying in a pool of blood.

I was the one carrying a child.

Yet my parents only cared about protecting Megan.

They weren't confused.

They weren't panicking.

They were buying time.

Time to build a story.

Time to make sure the truth never left that house.

I tried to call Nathan's name, but only a weak sound escaped my lips.

He heard it anyway.

When he saw the blood spreading beneath me, something inside him snapped.

The calm, controlled attorney disappeared.

Nathan lowered his shoulder and drove straight into my father, knocking him backward into the hallway wall before grabbing me into his arms.

""Hold on,"" he whispered as he carried me into the freezing Denver night. ""I'm getting you out of here.""

The drive to the hospital felt endless.

I remember flashing traffic lights.

Doctors yelling.

Scissors cutting through my burned clothes.

Machines beeping.

Then darkness swallowed everything.

When I finally woke up, I reached for my stomach before I even opened my eyes.

Nathan wasn't beside me.

Instead, two police officers walked into my hospital room.

The older officer removed his hat.

""Mrs. Parker... we need to ask you some questions about what happened at your parents' house.""

""My sister attacked me,"" I whispered. ""Where's my husband?""

The younger officer hesitated before answering.

""Your husband has been arrested.""

My heart stopped.

""What?""

""Your parents reported that Nathan became violent, assaulted your father, shoved your sister, and pushed you into the coffee table.""

I stared at them in disbelief.

My family hadn't just protected Megan.

They had rewritten the entire nightmare.

The man who saved my life had become the criminal.

The people who nearly let me die had become innocent witnesses.

Before I could even process it, Dr. Reynolds stepped quietly into the room.

She held my chart against her chest, her eyes filled with the kind of sorrow no doctor can hide.

She hadn't spoken a single word...

...but somehow I already knew my family's cruelty had stolen something that could never be replaced.

They thought they controlled the story.

They thought Nathan would take the fall.

They thought I would never be strong enough to fight back.

They had no idea they had just cornered a man whose entire career was built on destroying lies in a courtroom...
