Part 12: The Regulatory Ambush

The family courtroom in downtown Boston felt unusually cold despite the bright Thursday morning waiting outside.

Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, but it couldn't soften the tense atmosphere as whispered conversations echoed across the room.

I stood beside my attorney with my hands resting quietly in my coat pockets, staring across the aisle.

Grant Whitmore sat at the petitioner’s table, wearing a designer suit and a satisfied smile that made him look completely triumphant.

Beside him sat his new corporate lawyer, a man who had built his career on destroying independent logistics lines.

"Your Honor," Grant's lawyer argued, his voice booming through the microphone.

"My client’s firm holds the exclusive utility easements for the northern highway corridor."

"Mrs. Reyes-Mendoza’s project cannot legally proceed without our authorized biometric approval."

Judge Eleanor Thornton adjusted her reading glasses and looked down at the paperwork resting on the bench.

"Mr. Whitmore," the judge said, her voice dropping into a stern, clinical tone.

"You are asking this court to grant an emergency injunction to halt a public medical supply line. Is that correct?"

Grant stood up, his posture tall and arrogant.

"Yes, Your Honor," he answered smoothly.

"The operational data submitted by Ruta Norte is incomplete. We believe their refrigerated trucks pose a safety risk to the state infrastructure."

Soft murmurs spread through the gallery as people exchanged confused glances.

I didn't move.

I didn't look angry.

I simply looked at Marcus, who gave a small, decisive nod from the first row of the spectators.

"The data is perfectly complete, Grant," I said, my voice carrying clearly through the silent room.
