Chapter 5 - An Unwritten Ledger

Six months later.
The morning sun rose over the rolling hills of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, painting the sky in warm shades of amber, gold, and dusty apricot. The frost of the winter had melted away, replaced by the fresh, sweet scent of blooming wildflowers and damp earth.
I stood on the wide cedar deck of a beautiful, modest cottage I had purchased through my father's private trust, holding a warm cup of coffee. My left cheek had fully healed, leaving no trace of the violence that had occurred in my bedroom, and the dark fingerprint beneath my jaw was a distant memory.
Down in the driveway, my new car sat clean and quiet, its keys resting on the kitchen counter beside my drawing sketchbooks. I had returned to work as an independent financial consultant for the state, my days peaceful, my mind entirely at rest.
But as the mail carrier walked up the gravel path, dropping a small package into the wooden box at my gate, my personal phone—the secure phone Julian had never known existed—vibrated with a soft, persistent hum.
I picked it up, expecting to see a routine project file from Miriam Vale.
Instead, the screen displayed an alert from the secure server I used to monitor the TAX RECEIPTS backup drive.
ALERT: UNAUTHORIZED OVERRIDE ATTEMPT DETECTED ON REGIONAL LEDGER DB-7.
My fingers went entirely cold against the glass screen. I tapped the icon, opening the live tracking log. The IP address used for the override was routed through an encrypted server based in Zurich, Switzerland. But it wasn't the location that made my breath catch in my throat. It was the specific file they were trying to download.
It was the Vanguard Land Trust drive—the one my father had found in Julian's wall safe.
My phone buzzed again, a new text message appearing from an unknown number with an international country code. I opened it, my hand shaking slightly as I read the single, chilling line of text:
“Audrey Vance, the audit is not complete. Julian was only the manager of the local accounts. The true owners of the Vanguard land deeds are coming to collect the remaining balance on your townhouse property. We’ll see you soon, auditor.”
The line went dead, and the security feed flickered into static.
May you like
I slowly lowered the phone, looking out at the beautiful, quiet waters of the lake. The forest was still, the sun was bright, and the birds were singing, but as a sleek, dark black sedan slowly turned into the gravel lane leading to my cottage, I realized that the ledger of my family's survival was not yet closed.
It was an open map, and the battle for my home was only just beginning.
