Chapter 2: The Taste of Ruin

The boardroom on the 40th floor of the Carter Global tower was suffocatingly tense.

When I walked in at exactly 2:00 PM, dressed in a sharp, tailored black blazer and diamond studs, the entire room stood up. These were men and women who had watched me negotiate international deals that saved this company from bankruptcy. They knew I didn't bluff.

Michael was already sitting at the end of the long marble table. The confident, smooth billionaire executive was entirely gone. His tie was loosened, his hair was disheveled, and his eyes were bloodshot.

Next to him stood the Head of Legal, looking grim.

"Claire," Michael choked out, stepping toward me. "Please. It was a mistake. She’s nothing to me. She blackmailed me into that promotion, I swear—"

"Sit down, Michael," I said, my voice cutting through the room like a razor blade.

He froze, looking at the board members. To his horror, not a single director looked away or offered him support. Even Arthur Pendelton looked at him with utter disgust.

"Claire," Arthur spoke up, his voice heavy. "The board has reviewed the evidence you provided this morning. The financial audits from the past three months show that Michael approved a 300% salary increase for Miss Adams, listed under 'special consulting fees,' and authorized corporate expense accounts for her personal use. It is a textbook breach of fiduciary duty."

"Where is Miss Adams?" I asked calmly, taking my seat at the head of the table.

"Terminated," the HR Director answered immediately. "Escorted out of the building by security twenty minutes ago. Her company phone and laptop have been seized. We are currently preparing a lawsuit against her to recover the misappropriated corporate funds."

I nodded, utterly unfazed. "Good. Now let's discuss the CEO."

Michael slammed his hands on the table, desperation turning into pathetic anger. "You can't oust me, Claire! I am the face of Carter Global! If you fire me, the stock will plummet! We can settle this in a private divorce court!"

I leaned forward, resting my chin on my laced fingers. "The stock won't plummet, Michael. Because by tomorrow morning, the press will announce that I am stepping in as interim CEO. And the market trusts me far more than it trusts you."

I slid a thick document across the smooth marble toward him.

"Three years ago, before we married, you insisted on a corporate pre-nuptial agreement to 'protect your family legacy,'" I reminded him, a cold smile touching my lips. "But my lawyers added a specific clause. If either party commits an act of gross moral turpitude or corporate endangerment, their voting shares are automatically reassigned to the non-offending spouse to protect the company's valuation."

Michael’s face lost all its remaining color. He looked frantically at the Head of Legal. "Is... is this true?"

The lawyer wouldn't look him in the eye. "It’s ironclad, Michael. You signed it. By midnight tonight, Claire controls 51% of the company's voting stock. You are effectively stripped of your executive power."

"No... no, you can't do this to me!" Michael screamed, his voice cracking as he realized his entire world, his status, his wealth, and his pride were evaporating in front of his eyes. "Claire, please! I built this! You’re destroying my life!"

"You destroyed your own life, Michael," I said, my voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "The moment you allowed a junior associate to wear my robe in my bed, you decided that a few moments of cheap ego-stroking were worth more than your entire empire. I am simply balancing the ledger."

Arthur Pendelton stood up. "The board votes to accept the immediate resignation of Michael Carter. All in favor?"

Every single hand in the room went up.

Michael fell back into his leather chair, staring at the ceiling, utterly ruined.
