Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Lost Weekend

To understand the sheer magnitude of the trap Ryan had walked into, you have to understand the nature of our marriage.
Ryan Vance was the managing director of Vance Capital, a real estate investment firm that had built its entire portfolio using the private Sinclair Trust—an old-money endowment fund that my grandfather had established solely under my name before his passing. Ryan believed the corner office, the luxury penthouse, and the exclusive golf club memberships belonged to him because of his own financial brilliance. He treated me like a decorative asset, a quiet girl who spent her days organizing charity events while he "ran the city."
He had completely forgotten that I was a certified forensic auditor before I took time off for the pregnancy. And numbers, unlike narcissistic husbands, never lie.
The morning after Ryan’s watch shattered on the floor, the executive wing of St. Jude’s Medical Center was private, quiet, and heavily guarded.
I lay in the high-end recovery suite, an IV line pumping high-dose antibiotics into my arm, my skin finally regaining its healthy color. Beside my bed, resting in a portable hospital bassinet, Ethan was sleeping peacefully, his tiny fist tucked under his chin. He was safe, healthy, and entirely out of the Vance family's reach.
Leo stood by the window, a thin manila folder resting under his arm, his gray eyes fixed on the door.
"The hospital administration has officially flagged your file for active spousal neglect and domestic trauma, Chloe," Leo said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register. "The forensic medical team has documented the timeline. If Ryan had taken you to the ER when you begged him, the infection wouldn't have reached your bloodstream. His delay nearly cost you your life."
"He was too busy buying a watch in Aspen, Leo," I said, a cold, hard resolve settling deep over my soul.
"He won't be wearing it for long," Leo said, sliding the folder onto my tray table. "While you were in surgery, I didn't just coordinate with the doctors. I quietly authorized a remote digital audit of Vance Capital’s primary operating accounts."
I opened the folder, my eyes tracing the rows of transaction logs I knew better than anyone.
Ryan hadn't just gone to Aspen to celebrate his birthday. He had moved the trip forward because he discovered that the Sinclair Trust was scheduled for a mandatory, five-year independent review this week. He had been systematically siphoning millions of dollars from the development funds to cover his private losses in an offshore real estate scheme in Panama, routing the cash through a dummy consulting firm registered under his mother’s maiden name.
He believed that if he kept me isolated, sick, and dependent on him in the guesthouse, he could force me to sign a "power of attorney extension" right after the delivery, allowing him to bypass the trust review entirely.

"He wanted to lock me away, Leo," I whispered, my hand gently stroking Ethan's soft back.
"He built a cage, Chloe," Leo nodded, a sharp, predatory smile touching his lips. "But he forgot that we hold the keys to the gate. The federal marshals are already moving on his office."
