Chapter 5 - The Sparrow Awakens

The two unmarked guards moved through the industrial laundry room with the silent, practiced precision of professional soldiers. Their boots made no sound on the damp concrete floor. They swept their eyes over the rows of commercial washers, their hands resting lightly on the grips of their holstered firearms.
"Target is compromised," the lead guard whispered into his throat mic. "He has no weapon. The nurse is civilian. Neutralize the asset, retrieve the document."
Behind the massive steel drum of Dryer Number 4, Lily Parker took off her digital watch and slid it into her pocket. She reached into her scrubs and pulled out a long, heavy metal pen—a tactical writing instrument she had kept hidden in her pocket since her training days.
She looked at Caleb. His eyes were closed, his body leaning heavily against the industrial machinery. His breathing was so shallow she could barely see his chest move.
Stay down, she signed, her fingers moving with absolute authority.
She didn't wait for his response. She stepped out into the open aisle between the rows of washing machines, her shoulders slumped, her hands raised in a gesture of absolute terror.
"Please!" she cried out, her voice echoing off the concrete walls, sounding exactly like a frightened, panicked rookie. "Don't shoot! He's in the back! He's dying! He's not breathing!"
The lead guard spun around, his weapon clearing his holster in one smooth motion. He pointed the black barrel directly at her chest.
"Step forward, hands where I can see them," the guard commanded, his voice cold and flat. "Where is the patient?"
"He's... he's behind the big dryer," Lily sobbed, taking three stumbling steps forward. She let her foot catch on a loose plastic laundry bin, falling forward toward the guard with a loud, clumsy cry.
The guard instinctively reached out to push her away, his guard dropping for a fraction of a second as he dismissed her as a hysterical civilian.
That was his final mistake.
The instant Lily’s body made contact with his, her clumsy, panicked posture vanished. Her movements became a blur of lethal, high-speed kinetic force.
She grabbed his extended wrist with her left hand, twisting it outward with a violent, bone-snapping wrench that forced his weapon to point toward the ceiling. At the same instant, her right hand drove the heavy steel tip of the tactical pen directly into the soft nerve cluster beneath his jawline.
The guard let out a choked gasp, his knees buckling instantly as his nervous system short-circuited from the intense, localized pain. Before he could fall, Lily stepped inside his guard, using his own momentum to throw him over her hip, slamming him headfirst into the concrete floor.
He lay completely still, unconscious.
The second guard, thirty feet away, reacted instantly. He raised his weapon, but Lily was already moving. She grabbed the heavy metal laundry cart beside her and launched it down the narrow aisle with all her strength.
The cart slammed into the guard's shins, throwing off his aim as he fired a single, muffled shot that shattered a light fixture above, showering the room in sparks.
Before he could recover, Lily was on him. She dove low, sweeping his legs from under him. As he fell, she grabbed his forearm, using a classic Joint-Lock technique to force the weapon from his hand. She drove her elbow hard into his temple, silencing him instantly.
The room fell quiet once more, save for the hum of the emergency lights and the steady, dripping sound of condensation from the ceiling.
Lily stood up, her breathing slightly heavy but her eyes completely calm. She looked down at the two unconscious men on the floor.
"Rookie nurse," she muttered, a cold, humorless smile touching her lips.
She walked back to Dryer Number 4. Caleb was watching her, his jaw hanging slightly open, his pale blue eyes filled with a mixture of shock and profound respect.
You're not a nurse, he signed, his hands shaking.

I am today, Lily signed back, helping him to his feet. Can you walk?
Caleb gave a grim, determined nod. He leaned on her shoulder, and together they began to make their way toward the loading dock doors.
