Chapter 3 – The Empire Falls

Three months later...
The courthouse overflowed with reporters.
The case dominated national headlines.
Not because of the money.
Because of the betrayal.
For weeks, prosecutors presented evidence.
Security footage.
Financial records.
Forged signatures.
Private emails between Ethan and Vanessa discussing how to force me into signing away control of the Blackwood Foundation.
One message chilled the courtroom.
Once she loses the baby, she'll sign anything.
Gasps filled the gallery.
Vanessa lowered her head.
Ethan stared straight ahead.
The jury never looked away.
Doctors testified that the kick had caused partial placental separation and premature labor.
One obstetrician spoke quietly.
"If emergency intervention had been delayed another twenty minutes, both mother and child might not have survived."
Ethan finally took the stand.
"I never meant—"
The prosecutor interrupted.
"You rehearsed the explanation."
He played the kitchen recording.
"Pregnancy makes women clumsy."
Then another recording recovered from Ethan's phone.
"If anyone asks, she slipped."
Silence consumed the courtroom.
After less than four hours of deliberation...
The verdict arrived.
Guilty.
Attempted murder.
Domestic violence.
Fraud.
Forgery.
Financial conspiracy.
The judge looked directly at Ethan.
"You did not simply betray your wife."
"You weaponized her pregnancy for personal gain."
He sentenced Ethan to decades in state prison.
Vanessa accepted a plea agreement after fully cooperating and returning millions of dollars in stolen assets.
As deputies led Ethan away, he turned toward me.
"I loved you."
I gently cradled my newborn son.
"No."
"You loved what my name could give you."
May you like
Then I walked away.
Without looking back.
