Chapter 4 - The Ruined Dynasty

At 10:00 a.m., the grand gates of the Richard Family Estate in Lake Forest were pushed open not by a visitor, but by two federal marshals accompanied by three forensic accountants from my firm.

Melissa stood in the cavernous, marble-floored foyer, wearing a stunning white cashmere sweater, her hair perfectly styled. She was holding a champagne glass, celebrating the supposed completion of the asset transfer with her mother.

Her smile died the moment she saw me walk through the door, dressed in my old working suit, my face a hard, unreadable mask.

"James?" Melissa stammered, her voice losing its smooth, confident quality. "You... you're supposed to be in Minneapolis. What is the meaning of this? Get these people out of my mother's house!"

"The house doesn't belong to your mother anymore, Melissa," I said, my voice carrying a quiet, echoing weight through the grand foyer.

Miriam Vale, the federal prosecutor who had accompanied us, stepped forward, opening her leather portfolio and sliding the first thick white envelope across the marble console table.

"Effective immediately, the corporate charter of Richard Logistics has been suspended pending a federal audit for systematic wire fraud," Miriam announced. "Furthermore, the property located at 1420 Laurel Oak Lane has been placed under federal receivership as an asset derived from the proceeds of financial crime. You have exactly two hours to vacate the premises."

Norma rushed down the grand staircase, her face contorted in a manic, aristocratic fury. "This is an absolute outrage! My family built this city! You can't freeze my accounts! I have a corporate layout to finalize tomorrow!"

"Your corporate layout was authorized using a forged digital token, Norma," Christopher said, stepping out from behind the marshals, his gray eyes fixed on her. "We have the IP logs. We have the toxicological reports showing the physical force used against an eight-year-old child to secure those codes. And most importantly... we have the video from the neighborhood watch camera showing your car at midnight."

Melissa looked at the federal marshals, and then at me, her eyes wide with a sudden, paralyzing terror as she realized her entire lifestyle—the luxury cars, the designer clothes, the country club status—had vanished in a single morning.

"James, please," she whimpered, taking a step toward me, her hands trembling. "We can talk about this. We're a family. Think of Sarah... she needs her mother."

"My daughter needed her mother at midnight when she was bleeding in the dark," I said, looking her straight in the eyes. "And you told her she wasn't your problem. Now, you get to see exactly how the system audits a thief."

As the marshals clicked the steel handcuffs around their wrists, dragging Melissa and Norma out of the mansion into the bright morning sun, I turned my back on the grand foyer, walking away from the ruins of their kingdom without a single glance.
