Chapter 4

Eleanor’s mind fractured.

Julian Vance.

He wasn't dead. He was sitting in the driver's seat of their escape vehicle.

"How?" Eleanor choked out, staring at his missing finger. "If you're alive... why did Thomas have your finger?"

Julian turned fully around, his scarred face illuminated by the faint warehouse moonlight.

"Arthur tried to kill me fifteen years ago. He ordered his men to bury me in the foundation of the new corporate high-rise. Thomas found out. He couldn't stop them, but he dug me out before the concrete poured."

Julian looked at his hand. "Arthur's men took the finger as proof of death. Thomas stole it back from Arthur's safe to keep as leverage."

Sarah kept her gun raised, watching the warehouse entrance. "Julian has been operating in the shadows for a decade. When Thomas realized Arthur was poisoning him, he reached out to Julian to protect Leo."

Eleanor looked between them. A dead man driving, a dead mother's twin, and a boy holding the keys to an empire.

Thomas had orchestrated a ghost story to tear down his own father.

"So what is the plan?" Eleanor asked, her shoulder throbbing. "We give the finger to the police?"

"The police are on Arthur's payroll," Julian scoffed. "No. We give the finger, and the forensic evidence attached to it, to the one group of people Arthur fears more than the law."

"Who?"

"The cartel," Julian said softly. "The people Arthur blamed my disappearance on. The people he went to war with."

Suddenly, the massive metal doors of the warehouse shrieked, sliding open on their rusted tracks.

Blinding headlights flooded the dark space.

Three black armored trucks surrounded their SUV. Men in tactical gear poured out, leveling assault rifles at them.

It wasn't the police. It wasn't Arthur's men.

"The cartel extraction boat is late," Julian cursed, drawing his weapon.

A man stepped out of the lead truck. He wasn't wearing tactical gear. He wore a pristine white suit, entirely untouched by the rain.

He walked slowly toward the SUV and tapped his gold-tipped cane against the reinforced glass.

"Get out of the car, Julian," the man said, his voice echoing over a megaphone. "And bring me the boy."

Julian gripped his gun, his knuckles turning white. "It's Elias. The head of the syndicate."

"I thought they were coming to help us," Eleanor panicked.

"They are criminals, Eleanor. They help whoever pays them the most," Julian muttered. He rolled the window down exactly one inch.

"Elias!" Julian shouted into the echoing warehouse. "I have the proof! Arthur framed your family for my murder!"

Elias smiled, resting both hands on his cane. "I know, Julian. Arthur just called me. He offered me fifty million dollars and a permanent seat on his board of directors to ignore the truth."

Elias leaned closer to the window. "I prefer cash over revenge. So, I will take the boy, I will take the finger, and I will be leaving."

"Over my dead body," Sarah hissed, raising her gun.

"That is exactly the arrangement Arthur paid for," Elias replied casually. He snapped his fingers.

Dozens of laser sights instantly painted the interior of the SUV red.

Eleanor threw her arms around Leo, pressing him down to the floorboards.

She looked at Julian. He was outgunned, trapped, and about to be slaughtered.

"Julian, wait," Eleanor whispered fiercely. She reached into her pocket and pulled out Thomas's bloody letter.

She remembered the exact wording.

Look inside the watch. Do not trust Vance.

Thomas didn't specify which Vance. He didn't mean the lawyer. He meant Julian.

"Sarah," Eleanor whispered, barely moving her lips. "Does Julian know about the trust? About the will?"

Sarah frowned, keeping her eyes forward. "No. He thinks Leo just has the watch."

Eleanor’s blood ran cold. Julian wasn't protecting Leo. He was using him as a bargaining chip, and now he was cornered.

Without hesitating, Julian suddenly shoved the driver's side door open. He stepped out, his hands raised in surrender.

"Elias, wait!" Julian shouted. "I'll give you the boy. Just let me walk away."

Sarah screamed in betrayal, aiming her gun at Julian's back, but Elias's men instantly opened fire, riddling the SUV's bulletproof glass with spiderweb cracks. It wouldn't hold for long.

Julian stood next to Elias, pointing back at the car.

Eleanor looked down at Leo. The little boy reached into his own pocket and pulled out a small, black remote control.

"My dad said to press this if the scarred man betrayed us," Leo said quietly.

Eleanor stared at the remote. "Do it," she ordered.

Leo pressed the button.

Deep beneath the concrete floor of the warehouse, a synchronized series of heavy, metallic thunks echoed through the cavernous space.

Elias and Julian both stopped, looking down at their feet.

Suddenly, the massive shipping container suspended by chains directly above Elias's armored trucks released its payload.

It wasn't filled with cargo.

It was filled with thousands of gallons of highly flammable industrial solvent.

A torrential waterfall of chemicals crashed down onto Elias, Julian, and the mercenaries, instantly soaking them and the engines of their idling trucks.

The smell of gasoline and sulfur was suffocating.

Elias slipped on the slick concrete, dropping his cane. "Don't shoot!" he shrieked to his men. "One spark and we all burn!"

Inside the SUV, Sarah didn't miss a beat. She kicked the passenger door open, grabbed Eleanor and Leo, and dragged them out the opposite side, using the vehicle as cover.

"Run for the water!" Sarah yelled, pushing them toward the back of the warehouse where the river churned violently against the docks.

"Stop them!" Julian roared, wiping the burning chemicals from his eyes, but he didn't dare fire his weapon.

Eleanor ran faster than she ever had in her life. Her dress was ruined, her shoulder bleeding, but she held onto Leo with a death grip.

They reached the edge of the wooden pier. The black, freezing river raged below.

There was no boat.

"Where is the extraction?" Eleanor screamed over the roaring wind.

"There never was one," a cold voice said behind them.

Eleanor spun around.

Arthur stood at the end of the pier.

He was alone. He held a silver revolver, perfectly steady despite his age. He had bypassed the cartel entirely, knowing Julian would fail.

"You always were a disappointment, Eleanor," Arthur said, cocking the hammer. "Step away from the boy."

Eleanor stood her ground, shielding Leo entirely. "You killed Thomas. You'll have to kill me too."

Arthur’s face showed zero emotion. "Gladly."

He aimed directly at her head.

But before he could pull the trigger, the freezing water beneath the pier suddenly erupted.

A dark, massive shape breached the surface of the river like a leviathan.

It wasn't a boat. It was a tactical stealth submarine, sleek and utterly silent.

Before Arthur could even register what was happening, two heavily armed divers emerged from the top hatch, raising silenced rifles.

Pfft. Pfft.

Arthur gasped, his eyes widening in shock. The revolver slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the wooden boards. He looked down at his chest, where two red blossoms rapidly expanded across his expensive coat.

He collapsed onto his knees, staring at Eleanor with a final, hateful glare, before pitching forward into the dark water below.

Eleanor fell backward onto the pier, gasping for air.

Sarah ran forward, pulling Eleanor up as the submarine hatch opened completely.

A man climbed out of the hatch.

He was wearing a dark naval coat, completely dry, his face obscured by the shadows. He stepped onto the pier and walked toward them.

Eleanor’s heart hammered against her ribs.

The man stepped into the moonlight.

It was Thomas.

Eleanor stopped breathing. "You... you're dead. The poison..."

Thomas offered a sad, exhausted smile. "Arthur poisoned my wine. He didn't know I spent the last three years building up an immunity to aconite. The heart attack was medically induced. A temporary death to clear the board."

He looked down at Leo.

The little boy finally broke his eerie calm. Tears streamed down his dirt-smudged face as he ran forward, throwing his arms around his father's legs.

Thomas dropped to his knees, burying his face in his son's hair. "I've got you, Leo. I've got you."

Eleanor stood paralyzed. "You let me think you were dead. You let Arthur put me through hell."

Thomas stood up, his eyes softening as he looked at his sister. "If Arthur thought I was alive, he would never have exposed himself. I needed him to bring every enemy into the light. Vance. Julian. The Cartel. It's all recorded, El. The warehouse is rigged with cameras. By morning, the FBI will have it all."

He extended his hand to her. "The empire is gone, Eleanor. The family name is destroyed. We are finally free."

Eleanor looked back at the city skyline, where the false respectability of her past was already crumbling. She reached out and took her brother's hand, stepping onto the submarine.

She was no longer the elegant woman in black.

She was a survivor.

As the hatch sealed shut and the vessel descended into the dark, silent depths, the gold watch remained abandoned on the wooden pier, ticking away the last seconds of the old world.
