Chapter 53

CHAPTER 53 — The Swiss Cradle

The coordinates led them deep into the Engadin Valley, a secluded, snow-locked region of the Swiss Alps near the Italian border. The air was so cold it burned the lungs, and the towering white peaks looked like giant teeth guarding a dark secret.
A black armored SUV handled the treacherous, icy mountain passes with mechanical precision. Victor drove, his eyes scanning the tree line for snipers.
"We’re entering private territory," Victor warned as the vehicle approached a massive, brutalist concrete structure built directly into the face of a granite mountain. "This used to be a Swiss military bunker during the Cold War. It was decommissioned in 1991. The year before the Iron Ledger was officially registered."
The armored gates of the bunker opened automatically as they approached. There were no guards. No security cameras. Just the deep, rhythmic hum of a massive subterranean ventilation system echoing through the canyon.
Valeria stepped out of the vehicle, the antique brass key heavy in her pocket. She walked through the concrete threshold, the heavy steel doors sealing shut behind her with a sound like a small explosion.
The interior wasn't a military base. It was a cathedral of data. Row after row of liquid-cooled server towers stretched deep into the mountain, glowing with a soft, pulsing emerald light.

And standing at the end of the central walkway, under a single halogen spotlight, was Ernesto Salgado. He wasn't wearing his legal robes or a tailored suit. He wore a simple tactical coat, and his hands were stained with fresh grease.
"You're late, Valeria," Ernesto said, his voice echoing off the concrete walls.
