CHAPTER 4

A week had passed since the arrest, and the house had become a fortress. High-definition security cameras monitored every angle of the property, and the blinds remained drawn throughout the day. Inside, Ethan and Clara lived in a quiet, protective bubble, focusing entirely on Leo and Clara’s physical recovery. The physical bruises were beginning to fade to a faint greenish-brown, but the emotional scars were proving far more stubborn.
Clara found herself jumping at every sudden sound—the hum of the refrigerator, the wind rattling the windowpanes, the distant sound of a car engine. Her sleep was plagued by nightmares of being held down, her arms pinned to the mattress while Leo’s cries grew more and more distant until they faded into nothingness.
One afternoon, while Ethan was in the study preparing documents for the upcoming legal proceedings, Clara was in the living room trying to rock Leo to sleep. The doorbell rang suddenly, the chime echoing loudly through the quiet house.
Clara gasped, pulling Leo tight against her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs. She froze, unable to move, her eyes fixed on the front door.
Ethan came rushing down the stairs, his face tense. He looked at the security monitor mounted near the hallway. The screen showed a middle-aged woman standing on the porch, holding a folder. She was dressed in a professional business suit and didn't look like Eleanor or Cynthia, but her presence was still alarming.
"Stay here," Ethan whispered to Clara. He walked to the door, unlocking it but keeping the security chain engaged. "Can I help you?"
"Mr. Vance?" the woman asked politely. "My name is Margaret Cho. I’m a social worker with Child Protective Services. I received an anonymous report regarding the welfare of your infant son, Leo Vance, and I am required by law to conduct a home visit and safety assessment."
Ethan’s blood ran cold. An anonymous report. He knew instantly who had filed it. Eleanor was using the legal system to retaliate, trying to weaponize the state against them to prove Clara was an unfit mother.
Ethan unlatched the chain and opened the door fully, his expression hardening. "Come in, Ms. Cho. I suspect I know exactly why you’re here, but please, see for yourself."
Margaret Cho stepped into the immaculate entryway. She looked around, noting the cleanliness of the home and the security measures. Ethan led her into the living room, where Clara was standing, looking terrified.
"Clara, this is Ms. Cho from CPS," Ethan said gently, walking over to put a supportive arm around his wife’s waist. "Someone filed a false report against us."
Ms. Cho’s eyes immediately went to the fading bruises on Clara’s arms. Her professional demeanor softened slightly, replaced by a keen, analytical interest. "Mrs. Vance, I understand this must be incredibly stressful. May I see the baby?"
Clara, though trembling, carefully pulled back the blanket to show the healthy, sleeping infant. "He is well-fed, loved, and safe," Clara said, her voice shaking but resolute. "The people who reported this are the ones who did this to me." She pointed to her bruises. "There is an active police case against my mother-in-law and sister-in-law for assault."
Ms. Cho sat down on the armchair, pulling out her notepad. "Yes, I am aware of the pending charges against Eleanor and Cynthia Vance. When an anonymous report is filed, we cross-reference it with police databases. Given the active criminal case, I had a suspicion this report might be malicious, but I am legally obligated to verify the child's living conditions."
For the next hour, Ms. Cho conducted a thorough interview. She inspected Leo’s nursery, verified they had plenty of food and medical supplies, and reviewed the police report and medical documentation Ethan provided.
By the end of the visit, Ms. Cho closed her folder and stood up. "Mr. and Mrs. Vance, it is abundantly clear to me that Leo is safe, healthy, and in an environment of love. This report will be closed as unfounded. Furthermore, I will be filing a report documenting that the anonymous tip was a malicious attempt at harassment, which your legal team can use in your restraining order hearings."

After Ms. Cho left, Clara sank into the sofa, tears of relief finally flowing. "They won't stop, Ethan. They are going to try to ruin us using every dirty trick they have."
Ethan knelt before her, his eyes burning with a fierce determination. "Let them try. Every time they strike, we document it, we fight back, and we build a stronger wall around our son. They have no power over us anymore, Clara. We are going to destroy them in court."
