CHAPTER 9

The jury deliberated for less than three hours—a remarkably short time for a felony assault and unlawful restraint case. When the buzz signaled that a verdict had been reached, the tension in the courtroom was thick enough to cut with a knife. Ethan held Clara’s hand tightly under the table, his heart pounding against his ribs. He looked back one last time at his brother Julian, who refused to meet his eyes. The Vance family empire was watching its matriarch collapse in real-time.
"All rise for the jury," the bailiff announced.
Judge Vance looked at the foreperson, a stern-faced man in his late fifties. "Has the jury reached a verdict?"
"We have, Your Honor," the foreperson replied, handing a sheet of paper to the bailiff, who passed it up to the judge. After a brief review, Judge Vance handed it back. "Please read the verdict."
The foreperson cleared his throat. "On the first count of felony assault in the third degree, we find the defendant, Eleanor Vance... guilty."
Clara let out a sharp, trembling breath, a sob tearing from her throat. Ethan squeezed her hand, tears stinging his own eyes.
"On the second count of unlawful restraint, we find the defendant, Eleanor Vance... guilty," the foreperson continued. "On the third count of misdemeanor assault, we find the defendant, Cynthia Vance... guilty. And on the fourth count of unlawful restraint, we find the defendant, Cynthia Vance... guilty."
Cynthia burst into hysterical tears, burying her face in her hands as her defense attorney tried to calm her down. Eleanor remained entirely motionless, though her eyes were wide with a mixture of shock and unbridled fury. She looked across the courtroom, her gaze locking onto Ethan. It was a look of pure, venomous betrayal, but Ethan did not flinch. He stared back at his mother, feeling absolutely nothing but a profound sense of relief. The woman who had ruled his life with an iron fist of manipulation was finally powerless.
Judge Vance turned her attention to the defense table, her expression severe. "Due to the severity of the charges, the premeditated nature of the emotional abuse documented in the evidence, and the complete lack of remorse shown by the defendants throughout these proceedings, bail is hereby revoked. The defendants will be remanded into custody immediately pending their sentencing hearing next month."
Two bailiffs stepped forward, pulling handcuffs from their belts. Cynthia shrieked as her wrists were bound behind her back, but Eleanor silently held out her hands, her chin tilted upward in a final, desperate attempt to maintain her pride as the steel cuffs clicked shut around her wrists.
As the officers led them away through the secure side door, the gallery erupted into a flurry of motion. Reporters scrambled for the exits, and the remaining members of the Vance family quickly vanished into the corridors, desperate to avoid the cameras.

Marcus Harrison turned to Clara and Ethan, a proud smile on his face. "You did it, Clara. You stood up to them, and you won. They are going to prison."
Clara stood up, turning to face Ethan. For the first time in months, the heavy, suffocating shadow of fear was completely gone from her eyes. She wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder. "We’re safe, Ethan. It’s finally over."
